Description
Akari's father spirals into alcoholism and emotional turmoil after his wife's death, his grief paralyzing both his livelihood and ability to provide. Reliant on gold panning—a skill yielding little profit—he leaves his daughter burdened with managing their household’s finances and chores.

Six months before the story begins, doctors diagnose him with terminal brain cancer, the advanced tumor rendering surgery impossible and leaving only palliative care at a distant hospital as a fleeting option. As his health deteriorates, he insists on one last trip to a riverbank, joined by Akari and her reserved friend Kurokawa, to sift for gold—a ritual he’s cherished since youth.

The outing becomes a catalyst for Kurokawa, moved by the man’s stubborn pursuit of his passion despite frailty, galvanizing her own resolve to chase deferred dreams. Even as his body fails, the father’s obsession with panning endures, a fragile bridge between his escapism and unwavering dedication. Though his illness remains unresolved, the riverside moment—steeped in quiet camaraderie—hints at closure through his enduring impact on Akari and the echoes of his perseverance in those he leaves behind.
