Description
Jouji Kurata is a middle-aged saxophonist performing nightly at a Hakodate jazz club. His life revolves around jazz, with a particular reverence for Charlie Parker, though his own past holds shadows of disrepute. When Atsuko Akanegi flees familial pressures—including an arranged marriage to settle her family’s debts—he offers her sanctuary. Kurata provides steadfast emotional support and guidance, discussing her circumstances while maintaining ethical restraint. He deliberately avoids exploiting her vulnerability, countering her initial romantic advances with principled distance. Through these interactions, he indirectly helps Atsuko gain perspective on her situation, contributing to her eventual realization that genuine feelings might exist for her intended partner, Minoru Jinguji. His influence remains pivotal yet understated in her emotional journey.
