Description
Jérôme Karlstahl served as a brigadier general in the Republic of San Magnolia's Armed Forces, acting as superior officer to Vladilena Milizé. His imposing frame carried silver hair and eyes marking his Alba Celena lineage, while battle scars etched his face—a stark contrast to unscarred Republic soldiers—and a beard lent him an air of gentle dignity. He donned the standard Republic Prussian blue uniform, adorned with military ribbons.

Karlstahl embodied cynicism and pessimism, his spirit eroded by witnessing unending injustice and evil. He dismissed ideals like freedom or equality as unattainable, convinced humanity lacked inherent goodness. Publicly, he maintained a dignified officer’s facade, yet privately seethed with hatred toward the Republic, condemning its oppression of the Colorata minority as profound moral failure. He scorned Republic citizens as "foolish masses" who exploited rights while evading duties, and derided the military as incompetent, devoid of tradition or pride. Despite resignation to the status quo, he ultimately upheld soldierly integrity during the Legion’s invasion.

His background counted him among the rare military survivors from before the Legion’s first invasion. He shared a close bond with Václav Milizé, Lena’s father, having fought alongside him nine years earlier. After Václav’s death, Karlstahl supported the Milizé family, arranged the funeral, visited Lena throughout her childhood, and later facilitated her military assignments.

Karlstahl’s chronology intertwined with Lena’s. On May 13, RY 367, he reassigned her to command the Spearhead Squadron, warning of its lethally short handler tenures and advising minimal contact with the Eighty-Six Processors. He repeatedly challenged Lena’s idealism, branding her father Václav a "fool" who witnessed atrocities without instigating change. During operational clashes—such as on July 28—he rejected Lena’s tactical proposals to protect Eighty-Six lives, citing risks to Alba soldiers, and later ordered Spearhead on a reconnaissance mission explicitly designed as suicide. He justified this as executing the "will of the people" and the Republic’s interest in silencing Eighty-Six witnesses to avert global condemnation.

Their relationship fractured when Lena uncovered his awareness of the Republic’s crimes and passive complicity. Disillusioned, she ceased viewing him as family, addressing him only by rank and surname. During the Legion’s assault on the Gran Mur (August 25, RY 368), Karlstahl confronted Lena about her intentions before their parting. He then joined infantry forces to intercept the Legion, carrying a meticulously maintained older-model Republic rifle from his early service. He perished in that battle, presumed slain by Legion forces. Records note a tragic final encounter with Václav Milizé, assimilated into the Legion as the Shepherd "No Face."
