Minna no Tabo, or Taabō, is a human boy character created by Sanrio. He first officially appeared in 1984 as a summer postcard design by Akiko Shimasue. His origin traces back to a hot office meeting where Shimasue sketched a boy complaining "Duh~~, it's so hot~~" on her papers. Sanrio formally announced his name "Tabo" to readers of The Strawberry News in 1986. This initial postcard design sold over a million copies. Tabo is friendly, happy, intelligent, energetic, and consistently honest. He gives his full effort despite not always succeeding and makes friends easily, counting approximately 40 friends—mostly animals. His hobbies include sports, particularly swimming, where he excels. His dream is to become Santa Claus. An official 2001 description reinforces his bright, cheerful nature and straightforward approach to life, noting he sometimes panics. His birthday is May 5 (Children’s Day in Japan), celebrated with both birthday cake and traditional kashiwa mochi. His personal preferences include a favorite food (his mother’s omelette) and dislikes (tongue twisters and green peppers). Mysteries surround his real name and blood type. His birthday remained unknown for 12 years after his debut until revealed in the June 1996 issue of The Strawberry News, which also featured baby pictures. In media, Tabo stars in several Sanrio OVA films: *Taabou no Ryuuguusei Daitanken*, *Minna no Taabou Konnichiwa*, *Uchuu Bouei-tai Taabou no Toki no Tomatta Hoshi*, and *Uchuu Bouei-tai Taabou no Shinkirou Hoshi wo Sukue!*. He appears as a food vendor in *Sam to Chip no wa Hachamecha Dai Race* and in the audience alongside other Sanrio characters in *Pokopon no Satogaeri*. The latter OVA reveals he has an uncle resembling him, sharing his signature sleepy eyes. He also appears in the Roblox game *My Hello Kitty Cafe*. Tabo's popularity is tracked via the annual Sanrio Character Ranking. He achieved 3rd place in 1987, then consecutively won 1st place in 1988 and 1989. He ranked 2nd in 1990 and 4th in 1991 but fell out of the top 10 for most years between 1992–2004. He briefly re-entered at 10th in 2005 and has fluctuated between 19th–33rd place since 2010, showing stronger regional support in Hong Kong and Thailand. In 2025, he ranked 33rd globally.
