Description
Mitsuo Suwa is an 11-year-old Tokyo boy living a double life as superhero Perman No. 1. Recruited by Birdman, an alien guardian of galactic peace, Mitsuo received a strength-enhancing helmet, a flight-capable cape, and a communication badge enabling underwater breathing and contact with other Permans. Birdman also provided a copy-robot to maintain his secret identity during missions, essential as exposure would transform him into an animal.
Clumsy, lazy in studies, and averse to chores, Mitsuo possesses a fundamentally kind and self-sacrificing nature. He dreads ghosts, injections, cockroaches, and embarrassing scenarios involving exposed underwear. Though academically challenged, he proves capable when motivated. Initially smitten with classmate Michiko Sawada, Mitsuo develops conflicted, often unacknowledged feelings for his teammate Pako (later revealed as idol Sumire Hoshino). Their relationship evolves from quarrels to deep mutual affection, marked by his protective actions, emotional vulnerability during crises like her near-resignation, and eventual reciprocation of her love.
At home, Mitsuo faces his mother's scolding over poor grades and messy habits, though she acknowledges his visible efforts. His relationship with sister Ganko involves frequent squabbles and mutual blackmail, yet underlying care surfaces in peril, like her intervention against bullies or distress during his kidnapping. His father receives minimal mention.
As Perman No. 1 and team leader alongside Booby (a chimpanzee), Sumire/Pako, Hōzen Ōyama, and briefly Kōichi Yamada, Mitsuo navigates numerous near-exposures of his secret. Initially prioritizing impressing others, sometimes causing mishaps, he matures into a dedicated hero balancing responsibilities and personal challenges. His leadership, occasionally impulsive, reflects growing reliability in crises.
Key relationships define his journey: loyal companion Booby lightens tense moments, often through physical comedy. Sumire/Pako evolves from rival to his most significant confidante; she trusts him with her identity first, and they mutually confess feelings before his departure. Their bond culminates in a marriage promise. Michiko Sawada represents early unrequited admiration, later becoming a point of contention between Mitsuo and Sumire.
Birdman ultimately selects Mitsuo as his successor based on heroic achievements. Mitsuo leaves Earth for training on Bird Planet, entrusting his copy-robot with his earthly life. A special chapter depicts a brief return visit, highlighting his enduring quirks despite rigorous training. Sumire’s later cameos in the Doraemon series reference her ongoing wait for his eventual return, confirming their enduring connection.
Trivia notes include his favorite food (pancakes), limited allowance (300 yen monthly), and ownership of retro gaming consoles. His design features black hair, fair skin, green pants with a white shirt, and his Perman uniform—blue helmet, red cape, and P-shaped badge.
