Description
Dr. Isaac Gilmore is a Russian-born Jewish cybernetics scientist born in 1938. His early life involved surviving the Holocaust during World War II, witnessing the deaths of family members and close friends at the hands of the Black Ghost organization. During the war, he was captured by the Nazis and forced to work on their cyborg project before liberation.
In 1961, as a young medical surgeon in Moscow, he attempted to implant his own self-designed mechanical artificial heart in a patient. The procedure failed, causing the patient's death. This professional failure attracted Professor Brown of Black Ghost, who recruited Gilmore by appealing to his scientific ambition and arrogance, leading Gilmore to join without regard for the organization's immoral objectives.
Within Black Ghost, Gilmore significantly contributed to the 00-Cyborg project. He assisted in developing and converting multiple subjects, designing cybernetics for Cyborg 003 and overseeing surgeries, displaying minimal concern for the subjects' humanity while focusing on scientific achievement and reputation. His moral conflict intensified during Cyborg 005's conversion when Black Ghost insisted on using a cheaper, substandard artificial heart model over his objections. Upon hearing a colleague dismiss the subject's life as expendable, Gilmore suffered a heart attack. Witnessing the agony of subsequent cyborg conversions (006–009) solidified his disillusionment with the organization.
Guilt-ridden over his role in creating the cyborgs as weapons, Gilmore defected. With Cyborg 001's aid, he freed the cyborgs from stasis and orchestrated their escape, marking the start of his lifelong commitment to atonement.
After defecting, Gilmore became the mentor and surrogate father figure to the 00-Cyborg team. He provided ongoing technical support, maintaining and repairing their cybernetic bodies. Beyond technical aid, he served as their primary source of moral guidance and emotional support, helping them navigate battles, personal conflicts, and inner turmoil stemming from their transformations and persecution by Black Ghost. His regret fueled his dedication to their well-being and their fight against global threats.
A subplot in the 1979 anime continuity involved a romantic rivalry with a colleague named Gerhardt over a woman named Astacia. After Astacia married Gerhardt and later died in an accident, a deathbed confession where she mistakenly addressed Gerhardt as Gilmore led Gerhardt to seek revenge against him.
