Description
Albert Heinrich, codename Cyborg 004, originated in Cold War East Germany. He and his fiancée Hilda attempted escapes to West Berlin, sometimes disguised as circus performers or hidden in a truck. During one attempt, Albert either forgot forged documents at a checkpoint or botched the plan, prompting border guards to open fire. The tragic escape left Hilda fatally wounded and Albert severely injured. Black Ghost agents arrived, deceitfully promised medical aid, and took him captive.

After capture, Black Ghost scientist Dr. Gilmore subjected Albert to extensive cybernetic conversion. His near-fatal injuries required replacing most of his body with mechanical parts, leaving only his brain and spinal cord organic in some continuities. This process forged him into a walking arsenal: his right hand concealed machine gun barrels in the fingertips, his knees housed missile launchers, and his left hand generated a laser cutter or electromagnetic blade capable of slicing armored targets. The excruciating modifications proved unstable, causing severe physical strain and plunging him into profound despair and suicidal tendencies. This instability led Black Ghost to suspend early cyborg development and place him—along with other early models—into cryogenic stasis until technology advanced.

Albert maintains a gruff, stoic exterior but possesses a deep aversion to war and a fundamentally compassionate nature. Trauma from Hilda's death and his forced transformation fueled initial resentment toward his existence. Awakening from stasis and joining the full 00-Cyborg team provided stability through camaraderie and a shared mission against Black Ghost. He emerged as a strategic thinker and tactician, frequently collaborating with Cyborg 008. Despite achieving periods of peaceful retirement after Black Ghost's defeat, external threats repeatedly drew him back into conflict.

Later narratives presented renewed challenges. During the "Call of Justice" trilogy, Albert lived quietly until journalist Lucy Davenport exposed the malevolent Blessed organization, forcing the cyborgs out of retirement. Manipulations by Blessed led United Nations Guardian troops to initially accuse them of terrorism. In "Conclusion: GOD'S WAR," Cyborg 001 unlocked latent psychic abilities within the team, granting Albert telekinetic control over his bullets and enhancing their destructive power with psychic energy.

Albert's design evolved across adaptations. His classic uniform featured militaristic elements and a yellow scarf. The "Call of Justice" version incorporated a redesigned high-collared armored vest, elbow protectors, and knee-high boots, blending aesthetics from earlier iterations like "009 Re:Cyborg" and the "Devilman" crossover OVA.
