Luis Alfonso Mendoza

Description
Luis Alfonso Mendoza was a highly prolific Mexican voice actor and voice director, recognized as a leading figure in Latin American Spanish dubbing for over four decades. Born on November 20, 1964, in Mexico City, he studied acting at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes before beginning his dubbing career in the early 1980s at the encouragement of a friend. His work spanned thousands of roles in animation, live-action series, and films, making his voice familiar to broad audiences across the continent.

In the realm of anime, Mendoza contributed his voice to a wide array of characters. He is well-known for his work in feature films, such as providing the voice of the eccentric Dr. Kohsaku Tokita in the acclaimed film Paprika. He also voiced the character Dr. Dee in the animated feature Mary and The Witch's Flower. In series, he took on the role of Albert Heinrich, also known as Cyborg 004, in Cyborg 009 The Cyborg Soldier. His extensive anime filmography further includes Kon in Bleach, Gamakichi and Sakon in Naruto, Reiji Namikawa in Death Note, and Nobunaga Kyota in Slam Dunk. He also voiced characters in long-running franchises such as Pokémon, Inazuma Eleven, and Saint Seiya.

Beyond anime, Mendoza was the iconic voice of Gohan (from his teenage years through adulthood) in the Latin American Spanish dubs of Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Kai, and Dragon Ball Super, a role for which he is perhaps most widely remembered. His versatility extended to cartoon characters, where he was the voice of Bugs Bunny from 2003 until his death, as well as Daffy Duck, Leonardo in various Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, and the title character in Count Duckula. In live-action dubbing, he was the regular Spanish voice for actors including Kevin Hart, Michael Peña, and Ralph Macchio, and he famously voiced Joey Tribbiani in Friends and Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory.

In addition to his on-screen work, Mendoza was an accomplished voice director. He made his directorial debut on the series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and went on to direct the Spanish-language versions of numerous projects, including Dragon Ball Z Kai and the film Martian Successor Nadesico: The Prince of Darkness. In 1995, together with his wife, voice actress Lourdes Adame, he founded ArtSpot, a dubbing and voice training academy in Mexico City dedicated to cultivating new talent in the industry.

Luis Alfonso Mendoza's life and career were tragically cut short on February 29, 2020, when he, his wife Lourdes Adame, and her brother were killed in Mexico City. He was 55 years old.
