Description
Chang Changku, designated Cyborg 006, began as a Chinese restaurant owner. His life changed irrevocably when his establishment accidentally burned down during a failed fire-breathing trick meant to entertain patrons. Overwhelmed by despair after losing his home and livelihood, he fainted and was captured by agents of the Black Ghost organization, leading to his transformation into a cyborg.
Physically, Chang possesses a rotund build with a large belly, a prominent nose, and a chubby face. His black hair is combed flat, often with stray strands sticking up, and he sports a thin, curly mustache. His eyes are stylized with a cartoonish "3" shape. He wears the standard red, double-breasted military uniform of the 00 Cyborg team, featuring padded shoulders, black armbands, and a utility belt. In the OVA *Conclusion: GOD'S WAR*, this uniform shifts to deep blue with a red scarf.
Chang's primary ability is breathing fire reaching 3,000 degrees Celsius, capable of incinerating solid rock and tunneling through the ground. This power also facilitates subterranean attacks via underground explosions. During *Conclusion: GOD'S WAR*, his abilities were enhanced to include pyrokinesis, allowing him to shape fire into constructs like a dragon for offensive maneuvers.
Exhibiting a jovial and friendly personality, Chang serves as a team morale booster. His exceptional culinary skills see him preparing meals that uplift his comrades, often improvising creatively with available ingredients – such as using bats for food during cave hideouts. He takes pride in teaching cooking techniques to fellow cyborgs, displaying strictness and focus during these sessions. Despite his comedic role, he demonstrates seriousness in critical situations like missions or mentoring. His relationship with Cyborg 007 (Great Britain) features humorous banter and mutual trust, punctuated by frequent comedic conflicts.
Following Black Ghost's initial defeat, Chang established a second restaurant in a local city, implied to be financially supported by undisclosed means, showcasing his business acumen and desire for normalcy.
Across adaptations, his backstory varies slightly. While the 2001 anime emphasizes his restaurant ownership, other iterations depict him as an impoverished farmer driven to suicide before Black Ghost's intervention. In *Conclusion: GOD'S WAR*, a version of Chang exhibits gluttony, consuming large quantities of food and demanding more. His design was notably redesigned for the CGI film *009 Re:Cyborg*, departing from Shotaro Ishinomori's original aesthetic.
