Description
Bert Armstrong, also known as Robert Armstrong or Big Bert, is the second oldest son of Ned (Hrothgar) and Mary Ann Armstrong, with brothers Steve and Jon. His father, a hornless Boazanian persecuted into slavery, fled to Earth, adopted a human identity, aided in developing Voltes V, then vanished. Bert's personality shifted dramatically after this loss; once playful and mischievous, he became withdrawn and serious. Concerned, his mother sent him to the countryside to train under a martial arts master. There, he mastered hand-to-hand combat and specialized in weapons like the naginata and bojutsu through rigorous training and meditation.
He pilots the Volt Panzer, the chest and torso component of Voltes V, focusing on defense tactics. Physically imposing, Bert wears a dark green pilot uniform featuring a metallic tunic and a green gem. His casual attire includes military training outfits or simple civilian clothes like orange T-shirts and jeans.
Bert struggles with profound grief over his father's absence and his mother's death protecting the Voltes team. His emotional wounds deepened through his relationship with Judalah, a Boazanian spy sent to infiltrate Camp Big Falcon. He saved her from attackers and fell for her, unaware of her mission. Her eventual betrayal, culminating in an attempt to assassinate Prince Zardoz and her disappearance, devastated him.
Despite his stoicism, Bert shows deep compassion. He comforted teammate Jamie Robinson after her father's death, revealing Commander Robinson's terminal illness and delivering a heartfelt letter to ease her guilt. He is fiercely protective of his younger brother Jon, rescuing him during Boazanian attacks and consistently demonstrating concern for his safety.
Within the team, Bert maintains loyalty during crises, though he occasionally clashes with Mark Gordon. His combat prowess extends beyond the robot, showcased when he fought Boazanian fighters Takeo and Arisa in a coerced sparring match under Marquise Zaki. Bert's leadership emerges during tactical operations, coordinating responses to Beast Fighter threats and contributing to strategic decisions alongside Dr. Smith and later Dr. Hook.
