Description
Supreme Leader Dessler, initially called Abelt Dessler in Japanese media and later Desslok in English releases, ruled the Garmillas Empire with absolute authority during its brutal galactic expansion. His forces attacked Earth with radiation-based planet bombs, driving its population underground with a one-year extinction deadline unless a cure was found. This conflict established him as the primary adversary of the space battleship Yamato, racing to Iscandar for the radiation-cleaning Cosmo DNA device from Queen Starsha, for whom Dessler harbored deep, unrequited affection.
After repeated military failures to destroy the Yamato, Dessler personally intervened near the Garmillas homeworld. He attempted to weaponize the planet's fragile ecosystem, triggering severe environmental hazards. When this failed, he engaged the Yamato directly using his Dessler Cannon aboard his flagship. The battle ended when his weapon's beam reflected back, destroying his vessel and seemingly killing him. Dessler survived via emergency teleportation, later found and revived by the White Comet Empire under Emperor Zwordar. Temporarily aligning with this new enemy of Earth, Dessler sought vengeance against the Yamato, commanding remnants of the Garmillas fleet. He orchestrated elaborate traps, deploying space bacteria to cripple the ship and luring it into an asteroid ambush. Despite initial successes, these efforts were thwarted by the Yamato crew and internal betrayals within the Comet Empire.
Dessler underwent a pivotal transformation during a final confrontation with the Yamato near Earth. After boarding the ship and confronting his archenemy Susumu Kodai at gunpoint, Kodai collapsed. Witnessing the devotion of Kodai's partner, Yuki Mori, profoundly moved Dessler. He renounced his vendetta, surrendered his weapon, and provided critical intelligence to defeat the Comet Empire, marking the start of his redemption.
Post-war, Dessler led the surviving Garmillas population in search of a new homeworld. Returning to the Garmillas system for a final farewell, he discovered alien invaders desecrating the planet. His fleet routed the mining operation, but the resulting destruction caused Garmillas to explode. Iscandar, its twin planet, was flung out of orbit, prompting Dessler to pursue it. He later warned Starsha and her partner Mamoru Kodai of approaching danger and assisted their evacuation, demonstrating his evolved honor and detachment from past hostilities.
In later conflicts, Dessler allied with Earth against mutual threats. When a multidimensional galactic collision obliterated the rebuilt Garmillas territory (now called Galman), he prioritized rescuing refugees. Discovering a white rose—a symbolic gift from the Yamato crew—amid his ruined capital, he reflected on his connection to his former foes. Learning of the Yamato's plight during an invasion by the Dinguil Empire, Dessler mobilized his fleet for a rapid warp sequence to aid them. He destroyed the enemy flagship with his enhanced Hyper-Dessler Cannon, declaring "Yamato is the conscience of space!" as he intervened. He later paid solemn tribute to the Yamato as it sank into an extraterrestrial ocean.
Concepts for further stories outlined Dessler constructing a massive flagship named Battleship Starsha in honor of his lost love and defending Earth against new incursions from the Magellanic Clouds, motivated by loyalty to Kodai and a commitment to benevolent leadership. His birthday is documented as March 19.
