Description
Daisuke Umon lives as the Earth alias of Duke Fleed, crown prince of the annihilated Planet Fleed. King Vega's forces weaponized radioactive Vegatron ore to devastate his homeworld, transforming it into a toxic wasteland. As the sole known royal survivor, Duke seized the war robot Grendizer—a mechanical embodiment of Fleed's deity—from Vegan invaders and escaped to Earth. Crashing near Mount Fuji, he was found by scientist Genzo Umon. Genzo offered sanctuary and concealed Duke's alien origins by presenting him as his son, "Daisuke Umon." Duke found refuge working at the Makiba family ranch, tending horses and performing farm labor while hiding Grendizer beneath the Space Science Laboratory.
Duke carries himself with a reserved, contemplative air in daily life, often appearing calm yet haunted by loss. This demeanor shifts dramatically when piloting Grendizer, revealing intense combat focus, decisive leadership, and tactical mastery. His Fleedian physiology grants enhanced agility, accelerated healing, and the power to instantly generate a protective pilot suit. Lingering trauma from his planet's genocide manifests as profound survivor's guilt and a deeply conflicted reluctance toward violence, though he remains fiercely protective of Earth and its people.
Key relationships define his path: Genzo Umon acts as surrogate father and confidant; ranch owner Hikaru Makiba develops romantic feelings despite Duke's initial secrecy; and Koji Kabuto evolves from skeptic to trusted ally after Duke rescues him from Vegan forces. A pivotal reunion occurs with his younger sister, Maria Grace Fleed—who believed him dead—when their matching royal necklaces reveal their kinship during a confrontation. Maria joins his fight against the Vegans. Tragedy strikes with Princess Rubina of Vega, Duke's former fiancée, who sacrifices herself to thwart an assassination attempt against him, hardening his resolve against King Vega.
Duke commands Grendizer and its support craft—the flight-enabled Spazer and combat trike Dizer—throughout the conflict. Following a final battle that destroys the Vegan mothership and defeats King Vega's forces, Duke and Maria depart Earth to rebuild their homeworld.
In the 2024 iteration *Grendizer U*, Duke arrives on Earth suffering amnesia. His recovered memories reveal he inadvertently caused Fleed's destruction, triggered by a grief-induced berserk state after Cassado murdered his parents. Framed for the royal family's deaths and believing he killed Rubina, his guilt fuels self-destructive impulses and deep wariness of his own power. This version also introduces a "Starker" physiology linked to piloting Grendizer and positions him within the Photon Power Laboratory hierarchy under Professor Yumi.
