Description
Duke Fleed, crown prince of the peaceful, advanced Planet Fleed, witnessed his world's brutal annihilation. The militaristic Vegan Empire, commanded by King Vega, slaughtered his people, murdered his parents, and reduced his home to a radioactive wasteland for its resources. Fleed escaped the devastation aboard Grendizer, a powerful war robot embodying Fleed's god of war. Guided by the robot's navigation system, he crash-landed near Mount Fuji on Earth.
Discovered by Dr. Genzo Umon of the Space Science Laboratory (or Photonic Power Lab), Fleed adopted the human identity Daisuke Umon, posing as the doctor's adoptive son. He concealed his alien origins and the hidden Grendizer while living a civilian life working at the Makiba family ranch, tending horses and performing ranch duties. His appearance features shoulder-length brown hair, thick eyebrows, dark blue eyes, and classic Western attire: a brown vest, yellow shirt, trousers, and boots. Piloting Grendizer triggers an instant costume change into a red-and-black armored suit with a gray knight's helmet featuring a green visor.
Haunted by survivor's guilt and trauma, Fleed initially sought retirement from conflict. However, sightings of Vegan scout saucers over Earth forced him back into action when his friend Koji Kabuto, piloting a prototype aircraft, came under attack. Revealing his true identity, Fleed deployed Grendizer to defend Earth, beginning his dual life as rancher and protector. Outwardly calm and introspective, he avoids unnecessary violence and displays pacifist leanings. Yet, Vegan aggression or reminders of Fleed's genocide ignite fierce retaliation, showcasing superhuman agility, combat pragmatism, and berserk-like fury leveraging Grendizer's full power during dire threats.
Key relationships define his path: Koji Kabuto evolves from skeptic to trusted tactical ally despite differing temperaments. Hikaru Makiba, the rancher's daughter, develops unrequited feelings and becomes a support pilot. His younger sister, Maria Grace Fleed, initially seeks vengeance against Grendizer, believing it responsible for their family's death, but reunites with him after recognizing their shared heritage. His fiancée, Princess Rubina of Vega, defects upon learning Fleed survived but dies shielding him from an ambush, deepening his resolve against the Vegan Empire.
His character arc varies across media:
- In the original anime and manga, Fleed gradually accepts Earth as his new home, fights alongside allies to repel Vegan forces, and ultimately defeats King Vega. He returns to Fleed with Maria to rebuild, bidding Earth farewell with strengthened bonds but unresolved grief over Rubina.
- Gosaku Ota's manga presents a darker path: Learning Vegan Saucer Beasts are powered by enslaved Fleedian brains causes a psychological break. Losing faith in Earth's governments after discovering their exploitation of Fleedian artifacts, he preemptively conquers Earth. This culminates in nuclear war, global devastation, and his eventual hibernation beneath Earth with Grendizer.
- The *Grendizer U* reboot amplifies his trauma: Fleed inadvertently destroys Fleed and seemingly kills Rubina during a berserk state triggered by Cassado (his parents' murderer). Found amnesiac on Earth, he regains memories but grapples with profound self-loathing and fear of his "Superpowered Evil Side," making him reluctant to fight. His compassion persists, extending even to enemies like Cassado, though this trust is often exploited.
Fleed pilots the mecha Grendizer, which interfaces with saucer-like "Spazers" for flight and specialized combat. Its immense power requires a pilot with the "GN Gene" (Starker physiology), enabling his berserk states in *Grendizer U*. He frequently calls out attacks like "Double Harken" or "Screw Crusher Punch," emphasizing tactical engagement.
His story reflects recurring themes of loss, the burden of protection, and the tension between pacifism and necessary violence, with his development pivoting on loyalty to both his adopted homeworld and his devastated origin.
