Lyon Vastia is an ice‑make mage who first appears as an antagonist calling himself the Sub‑Zero Emperor but later becomes a key ally and the ace of Lamia Scale. His background is rooted in a childhood spent searching for the strongest mage to learn from; he was eventually taken in by the accomplished ice mage Ur, who also trained Gray Fullbuster. Lyon’s desire to surpass Ur became an obsession, leading him to secretly study advanced spells beyond what she taught him. When Ur sacrificed herself by using the forbidden Iced Shell to permanently seal the demon Deliora and save Gray, Lyon blamed Gray for robbing him of the chance to defeat the demon himself. This drove him to spend years gathering followers and eventually bringing the frozen Deliora to Galuna Island, where he planned to thaw it with the Moon Drip ritual so he could destroy it and prove he had surpassed his teacher. His scheme was thwarted by Gray, Natsu, and their companions, and during the battle Lyon came to terms with Ur’s true intentions, ending his vendetta.

Afterward, Lyon joined Lamia Scale and underwent significant personal growth. While he retains a cold, composed demeanor and a proud, competitive streak, he becomes more relaxed and even impulsive, as seen when he rushes headlong into battle alongside Natsu against the Oración Seis. He is quick‑witted and observant, able to deduce an opponent’s weakness from subtle environmental clues.
