Description
Build Typhoon, also called Heavy Load in some continuities, is an Autobot member of the Build Team specializing in construction and engineering, notably the Global Space Bridge. Despite his bulky frame and thick armor, he moves with unexpected agility due to martial arts training, rivaling lighter Transformers. His personality blends loud enthusiasm and boastfulness about the team's tunneling skills, often acting as a mentor to the team's younger leader, Wedge. He encourages Wedge's interactions with Optimus Prime and mediates team conflicts, though he may question plans if situations worsen.
He transforms into a yellow mining-style dump truck with an articulated dump bed that performs tipping actions. In robot mode, this bed detaches to form his handheld "Chomper Bucket" claw weapon, capable of snapping motions; it can also be stored cape-like on his back. His sturdy robot mode stands approximately 5 inches tall, featuring limited shoulder articulation but functional hip and knee joints, oversized feet aiding stability, silver and yellow coloring, a red visor, and a characteristic smirk reflecting his jocular nature.
Key missions highlight his strategic and combative roles. He intercepted Predacons attempting diamond theft during tunnel construction, devising a ruse with a fake space-bridge disk (actually sewer plans) to rescue Wedge. He later helped stabilize the CGA Tower by combining into Landfill to dig new foundations. His duties included guarding Fortress Maximus, intercepting Decepticon transmissions, and battling threats like the Commandos, Ruination, and Galvatron's forces. These engagements frequently required the Build Team to combine into Landfill for enhanced combat, with Build Typhoon typically forming the right leg or interchangeable limbs.
Beyond the primary cartoon, he appears in expanded media. The *Legends* comic features adventures aligning with the cartoon but set in a timeline where Transformers travel from the Beast Era to 2000 Tokyo. The *Universe* comic depicts him joining the Dimensional Patrol before abduction by Unicron; he later escaped to a frozen planetoid and aided the Children of Primus against Unicron's Minions. In IDW's *The Functionist Universe*, he appeared in a crowd during a political procession of captured activists. A separate *Shell Game* continuity (Viron 704.31 Epsilon) notes his reconstruction into Long Haul by Megazarak.
Toy representations reflect his on-screen attributes. The original Takara release (Car Robots, 2000) has minimal paint, while the Hasbro Robots in Disguise version (2001) adds Autobot sigils and weathering effects. Both include the Chomper Bucket accessory and combine into Landfill (or Build King). A Walmart-exclusive redeco (2003) altered his yellow deco with black highlights. Transformation involves repositioning the dump bed and cab components, with leg sections requiring careful handling due to tight joints.
