Description
Natsu Dragneel is a mage of the Fairy Tail guild and a member of Team Natsu. Born over 400 years ago as the younger brother of Zeref Dragneel, he died in a dragon attack that also killed their parents. Zeref resurrected him as the powerful Etherious demon known as E.N.D. (Etherious Natsu Dragneel), intending for Natsu to be the one to kill him. The fire dragon Igneel chose to raise Natsu instead of destroying him, teaching him to speak, write, and wield Fire Dragon Slayer Magic. Igneel also gifted him a distinctive scarf knitted from his own molted scales. On July 7, X777, Igneel and other dragons vanished; it was later revealed they had sealed themselves inside their Dragon Slayers, including Natsu, to travel 400 years into the future, recover their strength, and defeat Acnologia. Waking alone, Natsu believed Igneel had abandoned him and began a search for his foster father.
He was discovered by Fairy Tail’s master, Makarov Dreyar, and joined the guild, where he formed intense, sibling-like rivalries with Gray Fullbuster and Erza Scarlet. He was also close to Lisanna Strauss and her brother Elfman. While exploring the forest east of Magnolia, Natsu discovered an egg he believed to be a dragon’s; he and Lisanna cared for it until it hatched, revealing a blue, winged cat named Happy, who became his lifelong companion and partner. Natsu was deeply affected by Lisanna’s apparent death during a mission, though she later returned from Edolas.
Natsu has a lean, muscular build, average height, slightly tan skin, black eyes, and spiky pink hair. He bears several scars: one hidden on the right side of his neck by his scarf, a cross-shaped scar on his left abdomen from a battle with the future Rogue Cheney, and a jagged scar on his right cheek from a fight with Zeref. His red Fairy Tail guild mark is below his right shoulder. He typically wears a sleeveless, gold-trimmed black waistcoat often left open, white knee-length trousers, a black wristband, open-toed sandals, and Igneel’s scale-patterned scarf. His attire changed slightly over time, and he once wore bandages on his right arm to conceal a draconic tattoo containing a portion of Igneel’s power, which vanished after a single use.
He is carefree, reckless, and mischievous, yet profoundly loyal and protective of his friends and guildmates, whom he considers family. He confronts challenges with a direct, often physical approach and rarely holds grudges, having shown compassion to former enemies like Cobra and eventually forgiving Jellal Fernandes for harming Erza. He repeatedly challenges Fairy Tail’s S-Class mages—including Erza, Laxus, Mirajane, and Gildarts—to prove his strength, though he has been defeated each time. Despite his impulsiveness, he displays tactical intelligence in combat, identifying weaknesses in his opponents’ techniques. He values family deeply and rejects self-sacrifice, believing it causes more pain than good. His relationship with Gray Fullbuster is both antagonistic and caring, and he holds a particular fear of Erza. He is overly familiar with Lucy Heartfilia, frequently entering her home uninvited, and feels at ease around her partly because her scent resembles Anna, who cared for him in childhood. He trusts Lucy immensely and becomes enraged if she is harmed, sometimes tempering his recklessness on her advice. He exhibits little interest in the opposite sex, with only two noted instances of inappropriate behavior: attempting to spy on women bathing and groping Lucy’s breasts when she collided with him unclothed. As a Dragon Slayer, he experiences severe motion sickness on all forms of transport except when carried by Happy, whom he regards as family.
His primary magic is Fire Dragon Slayer Magic, enabling him to consume, generate, and manipulate fire. The intensity of his flames increases with his emotions, a phenomenon known as the “Flame of Emotion.” He uses this magic to enhance physical strikes, create propulsion, and solidify fire for climbing. He is immune to most flames and explosions. He can activate Dragon Force, a state that vastly improves his physical traits, endurance, reflexes, strength, and speed, causing red scales to form on his body. After absorbing Laxus Dreyar’s lightning magic in a battle with Hades, he gained Lightning Flame Dragon Mode, merging fire and electricity in his attacks. He also possesses anti-magic abilities, allowing him to incinerate spells at sufficient power. Training after the Tartaros arc revealed a dragon tattoo on his right arm containing Igneel’s power, though it disappeared after one use.
Natsu took part in Fairy Tail’s S-Class trial on Sirius Island, interrupted by the immortal dark wizard Zeref, whom he did not recognize. He later defeated Hades, master of the dark guild Grimoire Heart. After Acnologia’s assault, Fairy Tail was placed in seven years of suspended animation within the Fairy Sphere by Mavis Vermillion. Returning to find his guild weakened, Natsu unlocked his Second Origin—a separate vessel for magic storage—greatly increasing his power, and competed in the Grand Magic Games to restore Fairy Tail’s standing.
During the Tartaros war, Acnologia appeared, and Igneel emerged from within Natsu, disclosing he had sealed himself inside to prevent Natsu’s dragonification—a condition that transforms Dragon Slayers into dragons. After Acnologia killed Igneel, Natsu left on a year-long training journey with Happy to grow stronger for revenge. He returned with significantly increased power and aided Lucy in reforming the guild, which had disbanded during his absence.
When the Alvarez Empire, led by Zeref, invaded, Zeref revealed Natsu as his brother and the demon E.N.D., created to kill him. It was also disclosed that Igneel raised Natsu at Zeref’s request and sent him through the Eclipse time gate to ensure Igneel’s sealing and Acnologia’s defeat. Natsu’s demonic transformation activated with his desire to kill Zeref, manifesting both a “demon seed” and a “dragon seed” that threatened his life. After falling into a coma following a rampage in his demon form, he recovered by asserting his humanity in a metaphysical dream and destroying both seeds. He defeated Zeref while acknowledging their brotherhood, and Lucy altered the book of E.N.D., severing Natsu’s demonic tie and allowing him to survive Zeref’s death. Natsu then helped defeat Acnologia by destroying the dragon’s disembodied spirit in a space-time rift after allies immobilized his body with Fairy Sphere.
Following these events, Natsu and his team embarked on a 100-Year Quest, a mission never completed in under a century. During this quest, he faced adversaries like the Water Dragon God Mercuphobia and the Dragon Slayer Knight Suzaku, showing further advancement in his abilities.
In other media, such as the film Fairy Tail the Movie: Phoenix Priestess, Natsu defeated Dist, leader of the Carbuncle guild. In the sequel Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry, he fought and prevailed against Animus, ruler of the kingdom of Stella.
