Description
Born Siegrain, Jellal Fernandes dreamed of magic school and the Magic Council to protect his mother. Witnessing her murder by the Cult of Zeref led to his enslavement at the Tower of Heaven alongside children, including Erza Scarlet. He accepted punishment in her place during a failed escape. Ultear Milkovich manipulated him by posing as Zeref's spirit, corrupting his personality and fueling an obsession to revive Zeref using the R-System. He exiled Erza, falsely blamed her for bombing escape ships, and seized control of the tower's construction.
As an antagonist infiltrating the Magic Council via his "Siegrain" Thought Projection, Jellal orchestrated Erza's kidnapping for sacrifice to the R-System. He tricked the Council into firing Etherion at the tower to power it. In the battle, he immobilized Erza with Bind Snake and killed their childhood friend Simon. Natsu Dragneel defeated him by absorbing the tower's magic, causing its collapse. Jellal briefly regained his senses to save Erza and Natsu before falling into a coma.
Revived years later by Wendy Marvell's Sky Dragon Slayer Magic, Jellal suffered amnesia, recalling only "Erza." He unconsciously located and unsealed Nirvana, intending to destroy it with a Self-Destruction Spell to atone. Erza intervened, convincing him to nullify the spell and live seeking redemption. He aided the alliance against Oración Seis, granting Natsu his "Flame of Rebuke" to defeat Zero. Arrested by the Rune Knights, he remembered naming Erza for her scarlet hair.
Escaping prison during the seven-year timeskip, Jellal co-founded the independent guild Crime Sorcière with Ultear and Meredy, dedicated to dismantling dark guilds and defeating Zeref. Guilt prevented him from pursuing a relationship with Erza; he lied about having a fiancé when they nearly kissed. Disguised as his Edolas counterpart Mystogan during the Grand Magic Games to investigate suspicious magic, his fight against Jura Neekis ended in humiliation due to guildmate interference.
Jellal's combat relies on Heavenly Body Magic, manipulating celestial energy for spells like Meteor (hypersonic movement), Grand Chariot (meteor-like blasts), and Sema (summoning a massive meteor). He also uses Darkness Magic (Dark Grab, Bind Snake), elemental spells for Abyss Break, telepathy, and Thought Projection, supported by enhanced strength, agility, and endurance. A specialized suit beneath his clothes facilitates Meteor.
Physically, he has blue hair, golden-brown eyes, and a red tattoo under his right eye. His attire shifted from Council robes as Siegrain to dark coats bearing the Crime Sorcière insignia.
Personality evolved from a compassionate child twisted into cruelty by manipulation to a guilt-driven vigilante seeking atonement. He remains strategic and protective but struggles with self-forgiveness, believing he deserves punishment. Occasional moments of embarrassment, like reacting to Erza's nudity in omake episodes, reveal a flustered side.
In later arcs, he shielded Erza from dragons during the Games, comforted her after trauma, and rescued Kagura Mikazuchi despite her vendetta against him for Simon's death. He one-shotted the Spriggan 12 member Neinhart and confronted Acnologia to protect Erza, acknowledging the near-suicidal risk.
