Laxus Dreyar is the grandson of Fairy Tail's guild master Makarov Dreyar and the son of Raven Tail's master, Ivan Dreyar. This resentment intensified after his father's excommunication from Fairy Tail for endangering guild members, leading Ivan to form the dark guild Raven Tail. Laxus attained S-Class Mage status at age seventeen.

Laxus initially displayed arrogance, selfishness, and contempt for weaker guild members. He mocked comrades and demanded concessions for his assistance, such as requesting Lucy Heartfilia become his girlfriend or Cana Alberona strip in exchange for aiding the guild during the Phantom Lord conflict. He openly advocated for expelling weaker members to transform Fairy Tail into Fiore's strongest guild and orchestrated a coup during the Battle of Fairy Tail arc. This involved petrifying guild members as hostages, imprisoning Makarov, and activating the Thunder Palace—a spell designed to destroy Magnolia with lightning. His actions culminated in a battle against Natsu Dragneel and Gajeel Redfox, where he unleashed Fairy Law intending to annihilate the guild and town. The spell failed due to his subconscious recognition of Fairy Tail as allies, revealing his hidden loyalty. After defeat, Makarov excommunicated him.

Following exile, Laxus underwent significant character development. He accepted sole responsibility for the coup to protect his Thunder God Tribe subordinates—Freed Justine, Bickslow, and Evergreen—allowing them to remain in Fairy Tail. During the Fantasia parade, he tearfully regretted his actions after a silent show of support from the guild. He temporarily joined Blue Pegasus during Fairy Tail's disbandment but returned upon the guild's reformation. His motivations shifted toward protecting the guild, exemplified when he intercepted Hades' attack on Makarov, acknowledging Hades as "Makarov's enemy."

Laxus wields Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic, implanted via Dragon Lacrima by his father during childhood to compensate for physical frailty. This grants him dragon-like traits: immunity to lightning, the ability to consume external electricity to heal or replenish power, enhanced speed, and high-voltage attacks. His signature abilities include Lightning Dragon's Roar, Thunder Palace, and Fairy Law—a spell that consumes his lifespan proportionally to targets but only affects those he genuinely considers enemies. He also utilizes Lightning Body to transform into electricity for evasion or high-speed movement and Thought Projection for communication. As a Dragon Slayer, he suffers motion sickness but hides this vulnerability. Physically, he is tall and muscular with a jagged lightning-bolt scar over his right eye, a Fairy Tail guild stamp on his left ribcage surrounded by tribal tattoos, and spiky blond hair. He typically wears magic headphones and a fur-trimmed coat.

His relationships evolved from dismissiveness to deep loyalty. He initially viewed the Thunder God Tribe as mere instruments but later prioritized their safety. He reconciled with Makarov, who entrusted him with his will during the Tenrou Island incident. Despite past rivalries, he fought alongside Natsu and other guild members against major threats like Tartaros, the Alvarez Empire, and Acnologia. Notable feats include defeating Raven Tail single-handedly during the Grand Magic Games, overpowering Jura Neekis (the fifth Wizard Saint), and overcoming Wahl Icht despite lightning immunity and anti-magic particles. He also one-shotted a reincarnated Hades, previously deemed Fairy Tail's strongest adversary.
