Description
Hikari Daitokuji is the father of Biko "B-ko" Daitokuji and the powerful head of the Daitokuji Financial Group, a vast industrial conglomerate specializing in heavy machinery and military hardware. A billionaire industrialist, Hikari is initially driven by grand ambitions of conquest. When the alien spacecraft of the Alpha Cygnans crash-lands on Earth, he becomes determined to capture their advanced alien super-technology and unlock its secrets for himself. To achieve this, he leverages his considerable influence to convince the Japanese military that the stranded aliens are a genuine threat, secretly orchestrating attacks on their vessel to force a confrontation and seize their technology.
When his initial plans are thwarted by A-ko and his own daughter B-ko, he escalates the situation by deploying experimental mecha, including a giant battle robot named the Queen Margarita. These blueprints were originally confiscated from his daughter, who is a genius inventor. At one point, he pilots a powered battle suit of his own, a copy of B-ko's design, to intervene in the conflict. However, this endeavor results in a severe back injury when he attempts to catch a plummeting spaceship, though he eventually recovers.
Despite the serious nature of his schemes, Hikari's personality is not without its eccentricities. He harbors a notable admiration for Elvis Presley, famously donning a Las Vegas-style sequined jumpsuit for much of his battle against his daughter and the aliens. He also shares a surprising cultural bond with B-ko; both are well-versed in classical Japanese poetry and have been known to quote the same poem from the Manyoshu anthology during their confrontations. The relationship between father and daughter is one of the most defining aspects of his character. While they share a deep familial bond and mutual affection, they frequently find themselves as adversaries. Their clashes are often ferocious, so much so that Hikari knows he must fight with brutal force to survive B-ko's passionate rampages, as she takes no prisoners when enraged.
In Project A-ko 4: Final, Hikari's character shows a notable evolution. His earlier ambitions for world conquest have faded, and he instead pursues far more conventional and mundane activities. In this final installment, his primary goal becomes that of a matchmaker. He arranges a marriage between the teacher Miss Ayumi and Kei Yuki, a plan that inadvertently sets the main events of the story in motion when A-ko and B-ko storm the wedding ceremony. His role in the climax of the series is primarily as a supporting figure, with his presence helping to facilitate the narrative's resolution.
