OVA
Description
Barol stands as the primary antagonist throughout Legend of Lemnear media. In the original OVA, he is the dark lord commanding the wizard Gardein and the slaver Vuan. He orchestrates the slaughter of Lemnear's village in his pursuit of the prophesied Champion of Silver. Cast out from his own village in childhood as a human hybrid, this rejection fuels his embrace of dark powers and ambition to conquer the world. After Lemnear defeats Gardein—revealed as Barol's enchanted right arm—he confronts her directly at the Castle of Valkysas. During their final battle, Barol undergoes multiple transformations: beginning in human form, shifting into a dragon, and ultimately merging with the castle to become a stone giant. He declares his intent to destroy the world that rejected him if he cannot rule it. Lemnear defeats him by awakening her power to transform fellow survivor Mesh into the Champion of Gold, allowing them to destroy his weak point.

The manga adaptation expands Barol's backstory and alters his motivations. Originally a heroic figure, he used forbidden power to save his people, only to be corrupted by malevolent gods seeking humanity's destruction, becoming a vessel for their will. A key revelation during the final confrontation discloses that Barol is Lemnear's father; he orchestrated her birth and training specifically so she could stop his corrupted form. This recontextualizes his actions as a deliberate Thanatos Gambit, shifting his underlying goal from world domination to ensuring his own defeat to thwart the gods' plans. Despite this layer of Adaptational Heroism, his role as the ultimate adversary remains consistent with the OVA, including his transformations and final battle. His corruption by higher powers and familial tie to Lemnear introduce tragic complexity.

Common elements across both portrayals include his identity as a Champion of Gold, his capacity for metamorphosis during combat, his command over subordinate villains Gardein and Vuan, and his driving apocalyptic ambition rooted in childhood trauma. He is the architect of the protagonist's central tragedy and the ultimate challenge she must overcome to fulfill her destiny.
