Nobuo Tanaka

Description
Nobuo Tanaka was a celebrated Japanese voice actor and narrator, whose career spanned over six decades and left an indelible mark on the anime and tokusatsu genres. Born in Tokyo on August 1, 1935, he began his career after graduating from Tamagawa University, initially joining the TBS broadcasting剧团 in 1958 before affiliating with the Tokyo Actor's Consumer's Cooperative Society (Haikyo) in 1968. His rich, baritone voice became a staple in Japanese popular culture, recognized for its authority and versatility.

Tanaka's impact in anime is defined by several iconic roles. He was the voice of the villainous leader Sosai X across the various Science Ninja Team Gatchaman series, including Gatchaman, Gatchaman II, and the feature film Gatchaman The Movie. In the OVA adaptation of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, he brought the charismatic and menacing vampire Dio to life, a performance that remains a fan favorite. He also portrayed Cardinal Richelieu in the series Anime Sanjushi. His filmography includes a wide array of other roles such as Frank in The Adventures of the Little Prince, Barol in Legend of Lemnear, Ken Asuka in Karate Master, and I-Zack in Detonator Orgun. He was also a familiar presence in the Lupin III franchise, providing narration for the Lupin III: Secret Files and voicing Sherlock Holmes III in Lupin III: Part II. Later generations would recognize him as Captain Jonathan in One Piece and as Inspector Shintaro Chaki in the Magic Kaito series and multiple Detective Conan films, including The Last Wizard of the Century and Full Score of Fear.

Beyond these signature roles, Tanaka was equally renowned for his extensive work as a narrator. He lent his commanding voice to numerous series, including the narrator in Otaku no Seiza and the comedic narrator for Cromartie High School. His narration was a cornerstone of the Super Sentai franchise, where he served as the narrator for Himitsu Sentai Gorenger, Dengeki Sentai Changeman, Kousoku Sentai Turboranger, and Choriki Sentai Ohranger. He also provided voices for characters within the genre, such as Instructor Ritchihiker in Gekisou Sentai Carranger and Mister Voice in GoGo Sentai Boukenger. His deep, engaging tone also made him a sought-after narrator for live-action television programs, most notably the long-running variety show TV Champion.

Throughout his career, Tanaka demonstrated a remarkable ability to portray characters that were often the polar opposite of his own gentle nature, a challenge he openly acknowledged. This talent extended to his prolific work in dubbing foreign films and television series, where he was the regular Japanese voice for Hollywood stars like Sidney Poitier and Burt Reynolds, and famously voiced Sgt. Saunders in the series Combat! and Barney Collier in Mission: Impossible.

In recognition of his immense contributions to the voice acting industry, Nobuo Tanaka was honored with a Merit Award at the 4th Seiyu Awards in 2010. He continued to work until his later years, passing away from esophageal cancer on October 17, 2018, at the age of 83. His legacy endures through the vast array of characters he voiced and the generations of fans who grew up with his unmistakable presence.
