Description
Dio, who has shed his last name and is known simply as DIO during the Stardust Crusaders arc, stands as the central antagonist orchestrating the entire conflict. Having been dormant at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean for a century, he resurfaces in the late 1980s, now inhabiting the stolen body of his arch-rival, Jonathan Joestar. This physical merging leaves him with distinct features: a visible scar line across his neck where the two bodies are joined and a star-shaped birthmark on his left shoulder, a mark of the Joestar lineage he has forcibly acquired. His appearance in this era is characterized by a striking blond hair, red eyes, and a wardrobe that accents gold and heart-shaped ornaments, including a headband, earrings, and knee buttons, projecting an image of sinister opulence.
Personality-wise, DIO is the embodiment of calculated arrogance and profound cruelty. His defining traits are a ruthless ambition and a powerful charisma that draws others to his cause. He operates with an unshakeable belief in his own superiority and a cunning, opportunistic mindset that prioritizes victory above all else, disregarding any notion of honor or fair play. While he despises his own humble, abusive origins and executes those he deems disrespectful, he also displays complex emotional depths, having shed tears for his overworked mother and showing a rare, genuine respect for his friend Enrico Pucci. His primary motivations in this arc are twofold: to eliminate the remaining Joestar bloodline, who are a threat to his existence, and to achieve absolute dominion, which he refers to as "attaining Heaven".
Within the story of Stardust Crusaders, DIO serves as the primary objective for the protagonists. His reawakening directly triggers the plot, as the activation of his Stand, The World, inadvertently awakens Stand powers in all of Jonathan Joestar's descendants. Jotaro Kujo's mother, Holly, lacks the willpower to control her own Stand, causing a fatal illness, which forces Jotaro and his grandfather Joseph Joestar to embark on a perilous fifty-day journey from Japan to Cairo, Egypt, to confront and kill DIO, thereby breaking the curse on their family. From his base in Cairo, DIO proactively dispatches an army of Stand users to assassinate the Joestar group, using a mix of his immense natural charisma, financial bribes, and the horrifying control of flesh buds to secure their fanatical loyalty. His followers, such as the blind N'Doul and the vampiric Vanilla Ice, view him as a messianic figure, the "Savior of the Wicked," and are willing to sacrifice their lives for him.
Key relationships heavily define DIO's role. His connection with the Joestar family remains one of fated enmity, especially with Jotaro Kujo, who he sees as the most formidable threat. He also holds a possessive interest in Joseph Joestar, whose Joestar blood he needs to fully fuse with Jonathan's body and enhance his powers. On the other side of the conflict, he commands the absolute loyalty of several characters, including Noriaki Kakyoin and Jean Pierre Polnareff, whom he had previously controlled with flesh buds until they were liberated by the Joestar group.
Throughout the Battle in Egypt, DIO undergoes a subtle development as he perfects his abilities. Initially, his stolen body resists his control, limiting his vampiric powers and the duration of his Stand's time-stopping ability. His cunning is on full display during the final confrontation in Cairo, where he uses his power to pummel Jotaro with a steamroller and kills Kakyoin in front of his enemy to break his spirit. Desperately wounded, he drains Joseph Joestar's blood, a move that not only heals him but finally allows his body and soul to fully synchronize, unlocking his peak power and extending his time stop from a mere 5 seconds to a full 9 seconds. This moment of ultimate power, however, also marks the turning point of the battle, as Jotaro, fueled by rage, awakens the identical ability to stop time and delivers the decisive blow, killing DIO and leading to his body being exposed to the desert sun, which disintegrrates him once and for all.
DIO's principal ability in this arc is his Stand, The World, which he acquired with the help of an old woman named Enya Geil and a magical bow and arrow. Named after the tarot card for "The World," this Stand is a powerful, close-range humanoid entity with immense speed and strength, capable of trading blows with Jotaro's Star Platinum. Its signature and most devastating power is the ability to completely stop the flow of time. Within this frozen world, DIO is the only being free to move and act as he pleases, allowing him to land fatal blows and position himself with an overwhelming advantage. While in this state, he is known for shouting "WRYYYY!" and declaring "Muda muda muda!" (useless, useless, useless) as he attacks. In addition to his Stand, DIO still retains some vampiric traits from his original transformation, such as incredible regenerative abilities and the power to implant flesh buds into a person's brain to turn them into a mindless, obedient servant. However, due to his incomplete fusion with Jonathan's body, many of his classic vampiric techniques, such as the vaporizing freezing technique, are no longer accessible to him.
