Description
Genzō Makishima serves as a primary antagonist within the narrative of the 1986 anime film Guyver: Out of Control. He holds the position of director for the Japanese branch of the Chronos Corporation, a powerful and secretive organization. In this role, he bears the critical responsibility of overseeing the security and transport of the Guyver Units, powerful symbiotic armors, to the organization's central headquarters.
Makishima is characterized by his immense personal pride, ruthless ambition, and a willingness to manipulate or sacrifice anyone to maintain his status and power. He is a shrewd and greedy individual who views others as mere tools or stepping stones for his own advancement, a trait that extends even to his own family. He has a tendency to deflect blame onto his subordinates for his own failures and avoids taking personal responsibility when situations go wrong. Despite his arrogance and demeaning attitude towards those beneath him, he displays a notable fear and deference towards individuals who hold a higher rank within the Chronos hierarchy, such as the organization's leading managers. He is quick to anger, particularly when his plans are thwarted, and demonstrates a narrow-minded focus on achieving his goals.
Makishima's primary motivation is the preservation of his own elite status, power, and position as the director of Chronos Japan. He has worked diligently to achieve his standing, which includes producing many of Chronos's most effective Zoanoid models. When an incident involving a test subject causes the three Guyver units in his care to scatter, with one activating and merging with a high school student named Shō Fukamachi, Makishima becomes singularly focused on retrieving the units to avoid being blamed for the loss. His actions are driven by a desperate need to rectify his failure and prevent the downfall of his career.
Within the story, Makishima is the central figure of antagonism representing Chronos's interest on Earth. He orchestrates the search for the missing Guyver units, directly ordering the abduction of Shō Fukamachi's friends and acquaintances to use as leverage. He oversees the activation of a second Guyver unit, which merges with his subordinate, Valcuria, to become Guyver II. After Valcuria is defeated by Shō as Guyver I, a desperate Makishima takes Mizuki Segawa hostage in a final attempt to eliminate Guyver I, only to be killed by a third, newly activated Guyver unit, Guyver III.
Key to his character is his relationship with his subordinates, who he views as disposable assets. He tasks Valcuria with personally capturing Shō and discards others without sympathy. His most significant but largely off-screen relationship is with his adopted son and biological nephew, Agito Makishima, whom he took in after murdering his own brother to usurp control of a company. This relationship is entirely transactional, devoid of any genuine familial bonds, with Genzō treating Agito as little more than an employee.
Genzō Makishima does not undergo a redemptive arc but rather a transformative one as a direct consequence of his failures. Following his repeated failures to recover the Guyver units, he is punished by a superior, Commander Richard Guyot. As a form of disciplinary action and to serve a new purpose, Makishima is forcibly transformed into a prototype Zoanoid designated as Enzyme I, a creature specifically engineered by Chronos to destroy a Guyver. This transformation represents the ultimate fall from grace for the once-proud director. In this new form, driven by his hatred and desire for revenge against the Guyver he blames for his downfall, he proves to be a formidable adversary.
As Enzyme I, Makishima possesses several notable abilities. His body is large and possesses high endurance, allowing him to sustain significant damage, including severed limbs and massive wounds, and continue fighting. His primary weapon is his blood, which contains a potent, corrosive enzyme that can swiftly dissolve the Guyver's bio-boosted armor. To deliver this acid, his body is equipped with claws, teeth, and a tail stinger, all designed to inject the corrosive blood upon contact. However, his transformation was incomplete, which drastically shortens his lifespan to approximately one week. Despite this critical flaw, he succeeds in a brutal battle against Guyver I, ultimately tearing out its control medal and seemingly securing victory before being remotely detonated by his Chronos superiors.
