Description
Kiyosumi Kato is a fictional character from the *Baki the Grappler* manga and anime series. Once a top student of Doppo Orochi at the Shinshinkai Karate school, he departed the dojo, disillusioned by what he deemed its "weak" training methods. His path diverged into the world of the yakuza, though certain adaptations depict this time as a global journey. News of the Underground Arena tournaments later drew him back to Japan.

Known as the "Dangerous Lion of Shinshinkai," Kato possesses a reputation for formidable combat prowess. His personality is marked by arrogance and a volatile temper, frequently leading to comedic situations, especially with Doppo Orochi, Katsumi Orochi, Mitsunari Tokugawa, and Baki Hanma. Beneath this bravado lies genuine respect for his former master, Doppo; Kato acknowledges frequent criticism during training yet harbors no blame towards him. He diverges from Doppo's philosophy, viewing karate not as a way of life but as a practical tool for combat, defining martial arts as "the art of killing" practiced for millennia.

Standing approximately 180 cm (5'11") and weighing around 80 kg (176 lbs), Kato has black hair, typically slicked back, and black eyes. Visible facial scars remain from his brutal fight with Dorian. He commonly wears tracksuits or sweatshirts, with colors varying across adaptations, and dons a traditional karate gi for Underground Arena matches.

Kato practices Shinshinkai Karate, emphasizing ruthless practicality and targeting vulnerable areas like the eyes, throat, and groin. His arsenal includes techniques such as the "Crotch Kick," "Sokutou" (a side kick to soft tissues), "Axe Kick," "Ippon Ken" (a focused knuckle strike), "Seiken" (straight punch), "Soccer Ball Kick," and "Toe Kick." He fights with cunning ruthlessness, exemplified by his premeditated use of a makeshift weapon—rubber tubing and fishing line—to sever Dorian's ear, later claiming it was for fishing.

His narrative arc features significant battles within the Underground Arena, including witnessing early matches like Baki Hanma versus Kosho Shinogi. He fought Hanada and Yasha Ape Jr., struggling immensely against the latter and suffering swift defeat. His defining conflict was against death row inmate Dorian. Though managing to bruise Dorian slightly, Kato was left severely injured and scarred. During this fight, he voiced deep personal frustration, declaring karate the sole aspect of his life he took pride in, even while acknowledging his limitations compared to other top fighters. This insecurity contributed to his vulnerability to Dorian's hypnosis, where he envisioned dominating his opponent.

Kato experienced partial reconciliation with Doppo, rejoining Shinshinkai training while maintaining his pragmatic martial arts view. His role extends to supporting narrative functions, such as conveying messages from Tokugawa to Baki or participating in group efforts against threats like the death row inmates. His encounters consistently underscore a core tension: a fierce desire for victory and validation, juxtaposed with an acute awareness of his standing within the series' broader hierarchy of fighters.
