Description
Hanzo Hattori leads the Iga ninja clan, serving the Tokugawa shogunate through covert operations and assassinations, driven by unwavering loyalty to his lords. His marriage to Kaede, a Koga ninja, resolved a historical clan feud, romanticized in tales like *The Kouga Ninja Scrolls*. They have two sons, Kanzo and Shinzo.

A defining tragedy struck when the malevolent spirit Shiro Tokisada Amakusa possessed Shinzo. Despite Hanzo's efforts during the first Samurai Shodown tournament, he recovered only Shinzo's body, the soul trapped in the demon world. This failure fueled Hanzo's subsequent missions. He succeeded in reuniting Shinzo's soul and body in Samurai Shodown II, but Kaede sacrificed her own life to complete the ritual.

Hanzo exhibits a stern, condescending personality, often laughing at adversaries. He seeks worthy opponents, embracing a fatalistic belief that his destiny is to die in battle. His high-stakes assignments include executing Tokugawa traitors in Samurai Shodown V and investigating supernatural threats like the calamity-causing Dark Castle in Samurai Shodown IV. These investigations sometimes uncover ties to past allies, such as the demon-corrupted swordsman Zankuro Minazuki.

His combat relies heavily on mystical ninjutsu. He employs fire-based attacks like ground fire waves and explosive bombs, along with unique shuriken. Close combat utilizes koppojutsu bone-breaking techniques and acrobatic maneuvers like somersault and aerial spin kicks. Supernatural abilities include short-distance teleportation, invisibility (sometimes triggered by flash bombs), and creating illusions or dummies. Mobility is key, featuring exceptional speed, wall jumps, and tactical backdashes. His arsenal includes traditional tools like kunai and smoke bombs.

His dialogue reflects his philosophy on war and mortality, with pre-battle challenges like "To die is not shameful, but better you than me" and introspective lines such as "My life is a desert; my soul, a void. Happy thought, huh?" His legacy influenced characters like Galford D. Weller. Decades before *Samurai Shodown: Warriors Rage*, Hanzo defeated Oboro in a duel, exiling him and demonstrating enduring prowess. Throughout missions and personal sacrifice, his commitment to the Tokugawa shogunate remains absolute.
