Description
Yagyu Jubei is a one-eyed swordsman from Tosa. Once a samurai serving the Tokugawa shogunate, he later embraced the life of a wandering ronin. Born March 6, 1749, he stands 186 cm tall, weighs 71 kg, and has blood type O. He wields the swords "Protector of Yamato" and "Steel Tiger & Sukehiro," mastering the Modified Shadow Style of Yagyu swordsmanship. This style emphasizes the two-sword form of Yagyū Shinkage-ryū, focusing on deliberate, powerful strikes and defensive techniques. His signature abilities include the "Yagyu Mind Eye" for instant counterattacks, the "Moonlight Projectile" channeling reflected moonlight into ground waves or pillars of light, and multi-hit techniques like the consecutive-thrusting "Hassō Happa." He is known for armed parrying and advanced projectile variations such as "Retsu Suigetsutō" and "Zetsu Suigetsutō," which create large energy waves or pillars. His fighting style relies on predicting opponents' moves, favoring defensive play.
Jubei initially trained the Tokugawa clan in swordsmanship, with Yoshitora Tokugawa as his final disciple. After Yoshitora's father's death, Jubei retrieved the delinquent heir but eventually left formal service to seek personal enlightenment as a ronin. He accepts shogunate missions to eliminate supernatural threats and demons across Japan. During one assignment, prompted by ally Hanzo, he investigated a foreign ship connected to a princess of Amori. In the events of *Shinsetsu Samurai Spirits: Bushidou Retsuden*, he suffered a mortal wound from Agon, a minion of Mizuki Rashojin, trapping his spirit in an Evil Bell. He also appears in the alternate-reality side story *Yagyu Kachou*, reimagined as Jiyu Nanohana, a struggling modern-day salaryman who is frequently bullied but befriended by Hanzo and Tam Tam. His core identity as a swordsman persists across settings.
Jubei wears an eyepatch fashioned from a tsuba (sword guard). His appearance features practical samurai attire. Personality-wise, he is battle-hardened and loyal to the Tokugawa regime, yet carefree during peacetime, often laughing heartily. He values potential in younger warriors, encouraging them to surpass him. He dislikes "girlie men" but appreciates "younger wenches" as romantic interests. He expresses guilt after combat, stating, "I feel guilty after slicing someone up," and finds peace in simple moments like feeding sparrows. His straightforwardness shows in pre-duel warnings like, "Don’t be afraid of what I hold in my hands," and post-duel quips like, "Hey, you’re not that bad. You’re not very good, either."
Trivia includes his developer nickname "Dad" and fondness for dango (sweet dumplings), eaten during win poses and intro sequences. He breaks the fourth wall in *Samurai Shodown*, clarifying, "No, I’m not related to that guy in Fatal Fury!" distinguishing himself from another SNK character. His absence after *Samurai Shodown II* and return in *Samurai Shodown IV* is noted, as are unused plans for *Samurai Shodown 64*. He is referenced in crossovers like *Capcom vs. SNK* and *The King of Fighters XV*, where Haohmaru mentions him. Regarding *Samurai Shodown: The Motion Picture*, the provided sources offer no details about Jubei's portrayal or role in this specific anime adaptation.
