Description
Alita, known as Gally in Japanese and originally named Yoko, originates from Mars. She received the designation HK-BR035 after being extracted as a maske tumor from Nollin Sonann and grafted into a mechanical body, becoming a cyborg from "birth." Political conspiracies entangled her early life, including abduction by Cydonian forces and a forced minefield walk before Panzer Kunst warriors rescued her. She was then raised in an orphanage in Flammarion's Mamiana town alongside Erica, a sympathetic girl who became her adopted sister.

Her appearance remains consistent across cyborg bodies: approximately 150 cm tall (4 feet 11 inches) with shoulder-length dark hair, a fair-skinned face, and metallic grey limbs. Permanent eye black features appear on her face starting with her TUNED body, absent in her initial Imaginos Body. After merging with Tunguska during resurrection, she develops a prehensile cat-like tail and exhibits more feline behavior, a reference to her namesake—Daisuke Ido's deceased pet cat, Alita. Her outfits vary: hunter-warrior attire includes black leather fingerless gloves, sleeveless shirt, pants, knee-high brown boots, and a light-yellow trench coat; her Motorball body is purple with yellow "99" markings; TUNED missions involve a bodysuit with armor and cape, its color varying between depictions.

Key relationships shape her development. Daisuke Ido discovers her remains in a scrapyard dumpheap, revives her, and names her after his dead cat (adapted to his deceased daughter in the film). He acts as a father figure, opposing her initial career choices but ultimately supporting her autonomy. Hugo, a human scrap dealer in the original manga and film, becomes her romantic interest; his death while attempting to reach Zalem profoundly impacts her motivation. Erica, her adopted sister from Mars Chronicle, shares a complex bond marked by rivalry and conflict, including Erica's involvement in the death of Yoko's caretaker Kyoko Bima.

Her primary ability is mastery of Panzer Kunst, a Martian cyborg martial art. Initially ranked as a Geselle, she advances to at least Höher Krieger level during the Zenith of Things Tournament. Unique techniques include plasma manipulation—Plasma Bissen (undetectable fingertip plasma jets), Plasma Boost (supersonic acceleration), and Shaped Charge attacks—all tied to specific cyborg bodies. After receiving the relic Fata Morgana, she gains direct neural access to the quantum supercomputer Melchizedek, enabling advanced hacking and dream-based cyberspace navigation. Later equipment includes the sentient cannon Danko, which fires Berserker-cell bullets. Non-combat skills include musical proficiency: she performs as a singer using a keyboard and plays harmonica.

Her character evolves across phases. Resurrected with amnesia by Ido, she displays naïveté but instinctively recalls combat skills when saving him from a mutant. As a hunter-warrior and Motorball player (earning monikers like "Killing Angel"), she seeks identity through combat. Existential crises arise upon learning her brain was replaced with a bio-chip and her body dissolves during the ZOTT tournament. Post-resurrection via fusion with Tunguska, she leads the Space Angels team and competes in the Zenith of Things Tournament, maturing into a strategic leader. In Mars Chronicle, she returns to Mars to confront unresolved conflicts, including those with Erica.

Cyborg bodies define her capabilities:
- Initial civilian body: Destroyed early by Makaku.
- Berserker Body: Military-grade chassis used during hunter-warrior phase; film adaptation adapts to her subconscious self-image.
- Motorball body: Purple armor emphasizing speed; features Damascus Blades later forged into her signature weapon.
- TUNED body: Equipped by Tiphares' Ground Investigation Bureau with supersonic mobility and remote-operated shock stimulus for compliance.
- Imaginos Body 2.0: Post-resurrection nanomachine-based form with regenerative properties and tail.

Film-specific traits include a preference for oranges and chocolate, the mantra "I do not stand by in the presence of evil," and accelerated plot points like Hugo's death during his Zalem ascent. Her berserker body in the film enhances flexibility and strength, allowing maneuvers like single-finger body support.
