TV-Series
Description
Ryo Shiba is an orphaned military academy graduate who embraced wandering to master Chinese kenpo martial arts. General Ross Igor personally recruited him into the Cyber Beast Force (Jyusenki Tai), reuniting him with the team in Kansas City after a major battle. His orphaned background shapes his self-reliant and spiritually disciplined character.

Ryo exhibits a quiet, introspective demeanor rooted in kenpo and Taoist spirituality. He becomes the most aggressive combatant against enemies, applying martial arts techniques even while piloting a mech. Despite this ferocity, he upholds a martial pacifist code, initially reluctant to fight humans—a vulnerability exploited by foes using Ridiculously Human Robots. Protecting loved ones at great personal risk fuels his actions.

Within the Cyber Beast Force, Ryo pilots the Big Moth, which transforms into a mammoth and forms the primary body of the combining robot Dancouga. As the tallest and strongest member, he embodies "The Big Guy" role. His technical expertise and calmness counterbalance Shinobu Fujiwara’s impulsiveness; Ryo frequently steers Shinobu back on track during crises to maintain unit cohesion. The mental synchronization required for Dancouga’s combinations drives his evolution from an ineffective loner to a collaborative teammate.

Sequels advance his development: In *God Bless Dancouga*, he adopts a drill sergeant role post-war, reflecting his discipline, and marries after the Muge Empire conflict, ending his celibacy. The *Blazing Epilogue* OVAs introduce no new developments.

Spin-off media like *Super Robot Wars* explore Ryo’s interdimensional experiences. After his commander defects during the Neo Atlanteans conflict, Captain Nemo assumes leadership. A "Concept Change" event in *GU2* briefly displaces him to another dimension, severing team communication. He later reunites with them, retaining his protective instincts and combat philosophy across these narratives.
