Description
Kumoko begins as a mundane spider in a Japanese classroom, spared by a teacher but killed in an explosion during a clash between the Hero and Demon Lord. The evil god D, feeling responsible, reincarnates the deceased students and overwrites the spider’s soul with a fragment of her own, implanting false memories of being a human student named Wakaba Hiiro to mask divine involvement.
Reborn as a Small Lesser Taratect in the perilous Great Elroe Labyrinth, she retains fractured memories yet swiftly adapts. Survival demands escaping cannibalistic siblings and a monstrous Mother while honing skills like thread manipulation and Appraisal. Her initial form boasts a white body with black splotches, eight red eyes, and clawed forefeet.
She evolves through stages: as a Zoa Ele, her body turns pitch-black with scythe-like claws; as a Zana Horowa, she becomes snow-white while keeping the scythe claws. Finally, as an Arachne, she merges the upper body of a pale-skinned girl with white hair and red eyes into a giant white spider abdomen. This form retains the spider’s original head and eyes, granting dual brains that ensure survival if either head remains. She forges a scythe from her claw, channeling Rot Attack through it.
Initially hopeful and determined, Kumoko sets goals like learning human speech. Prolonged trauma—starvation, toxic prey consumption, and grave injuries—erodes her empathy. She adopts sarcasm and internal monologues as coping mechanisms. Acquiring skills like Parallel Minds and Ruler titles (Pride, Perseverance) warps her psyche irreversibly, amplifying ruthlessness and self-interest. Fleeting conscience persists; she occasionally aids strangers while justifying it as self-serving, such as for skill gains. Over two years of isolation cripples her communication.
After escaping the labyrinth, she brokers a cease-fire with the demon lord Ariel, recognizing mutual lethality. Traveling with Ariel’s group—including vampire Sophia and former classmate Wrath—she earns the name "White." When Ariel sacrifices herself to protect her from the elf Potimas, Kumoko abandons selfish rationalizations and acknowledges genuine care for her companions. Later, confronting a planet-destroying bomb, she absorbs its energy to ascend to godhood, receiving the name Shiraori from D. Her story ends serving D eternally, severed from allies.
Throughout her journey, she gains diverse abilities: Rot Attack for decomposition, Parallel Minds for multitasking, and spatial magic for teleportation and pocket dimensions. Post-apotheosis, she wields high-level resistances, reality manipulation, time stop, and interdimensional travel. Her self-made scythe, later enhanced by D, ignores anti-magic defenses and self-repairs. She exhibits combat genius, exploiting skill synergies and dissecting foes instantly, though communication falters.
In broader history, she is mythologized as the "Nightmare of the Labyrinth" and later commands the 10th Demon Army as Shiro. During the Elf Village Battle, her human classmates—including the hero Shun—mistake her for Wakaba’s reincarnation.
