Description
Ashram, the "Black Knight," hailed from a noble Alania family. His father, an Alanian army captain, faced wrongful conviction for dishonesty through falsified evidence, resulting in the family's exile to the dark island of Marmo. During the voyage, Ashram encountered Owen, a fellow exile who became his closest friend. On Marmo, assassins from the Thieves' Guild killed Ashram's father, and his mother abandoned him. This trauma forged Ashram's vow to survive through ruthlessness; he formed a gang with Owen and other displaced children, dedicated to destroying the Thieves' Guild. At sixteen, Ashram murdered his mother and her lover, deepening his violent path.
Years later, after Owen betrayed him to the Thieves' Guild in a failed plot to eliminate Emperor Beld, Ashram instead allied with Beld. He served as Beld's retainer and right-hand aide during the conquest of Marmo and the War of Heroes. Following Beld's death, Ashram assumed command of Marmo's forces, wielding the demon sword Soul Crusher. Seeking a new homeland for his people, Ashram led them across the sea to Crystania, a land guarded by the Gods' Wall. There, the evil animal god Barbas offered passage in exchange for Ashram's body. Ashram accepted, allowing Barbas possession.
Centuries later, Barbas still controlled Ashram's body, ruling Crystania from Dayton Castle as the self-proclaimed "Gods' King." Ashram's consciousness endured, intermittently resisting Barbas's domination. His former companion, the dark elf Pirotess (now Sheru), witnessed his struggle and devoted herself to freeing him. She theorized the Ring of Chaos—used by Barbas's aide Mahu to suppress Ashram's soul—could instead liberate him.
Sheru allied with Redon, a prince from Da'nan seeking vengeance for his parents' murder, to infiltrate Dayton Castle. During their assault, Sheru used the Ring of Chaos to sever Barbas's control, freeing Ashram's soul. This liberation cost Ashram his life. In his final moments, Ashram expressed gratitude to Sheru and Redon before dying, released from centuries of torment.
Ashram's character embodied complexity: cold and ruthless in battle, yet capable of profound loyalty, particularly to Beld and Sheru. His journey reflected a relentless pursuit of power, culminating in sacrifice and redemption.
