Description
Mamoru Hongo anchors the Kitahara Elementary School soccer team, the Kickers, as both goalkeeper and captain. Beginning with an asocial, detached demeanor, his connection with spirited newcomer Kakeru Daichi rekindles his own passion for soccer and ignites motivation within the previously struggling team. His leadership proves fundamental to the Kickers' evolution, driving them to challenge themselves in the children's championship despite a history of losses. He consistently champions teamwork and perseverance, convinced that dedication can overcome even formidable opponents like the undefeatable goalkeeper of the secondary school Red Devils. His rallying cry, "Even if we are foolish people, we can still do something!" embodies his unwavering determinator spirit.

As captain, Hongo serves as the team's emotional anchor, providing crucial stability during setbacks like their crushing 10-1 defeat by the Red Devils or the internal rift caused by disruptive star player Harry. His maturity and responsibility as the oldest member often cast him in a team dad role, extending his influence beyond mere tactics. He balances athletic commitment with academic diligence, occasionally prioritizing studies but always returning to support the team, reflecting his multifaceted dedication.

Hongo's personal growth involves developing romantic feelings for Ayumi Daichi, Kakeru's sister, leading to comedic tensions with the team's devoted cheerleader trio. This subplot reveals moments where even his typically stoic and reasonable demeanor falters, showing vulnerability to distractions, such as during a match against an all-female team. He can display stubbornness or emotional fragility, particularly concerning Ayumi or team conflicts. His relationship with Ayumi also fuels contention with Harry, who attempts to sabotage the team partly to win her affection.

After the Kickers' elimination in the championship semi-finals during a rematch against the Red Devils, Hongo helps the team recover from disappointment. He plays a pivotal role in reuniting the fractured Kickers following Harry's betrayal and formation of a rival team, ultimately guiding them to victory through collective effort and support from former rivals like Uesugi. His leadership ensures team cohesion and reinforces their core values of friendship and resilience.

Upon graduating from elementary school, Hongo passes the captaincy to Kenta Ishii before departing the team. His exit concludes his direct involvement but solidifies his legacy in shaping the Kickers' enduring identity and spirit.
