Description
Becca Robinson, originally named Flone in the Japanese version, is the adventurous nine-year-old middle child and sole daughter of the Robinson family. She sports long orange hair, dark brown eyes, and youthful freckles, typically wearing a pink-and-white short-sleeved dress with a flower in her hair while often going barefoot. Her family includes father Ernst, a doctor; mother Anna, skilled in farming; older brother Fritz, an aspiring musician; and younger brother Jack, a cheerful insect collector. Becca fiercely protects Jack and occasionally challenges parental rules despite her good-hearted intentions, serving as the story’s primary narrator and viewpoint.

The Robinsons planned to relocate from Switzerland to Australia at Dr. Elliot’s request. Becca eagerly anticipated the move but hesitated when their maid couldn’t join, though the family ultimately departed after Fritz’s last-minute arrival. A violent storm shipwrecked them near 155° East Longitude and 10° South Latitude on an uninhabited island. There, Becca embraced survival tasks: exploring, fetching water, and gathering resources. Her deep compassion for animals surfaced when she spared a bird during a hunt and instead tamed a goat to provide milk.

Her curiosity led her to discover warm underground water in a cave, where the family also found and buried the skeleton of castaway Eric Bates. Later, she encountered TomTom, an Australian Aboriginal boy living with the abrasive British sailor Mr. Morton. Wary due to TomTom’s past with European settlers, Becca bridged their cultural gap through kindness, forging a strong friendship that helped him overcome distrust. The Robinsons taught TomTom reading and mathematics, integrating him into their family.

After frequent earthquakes exposed the island’s volcanic nature, Becca helped build an escape ship. Their arduous voyage ended in Australia, where they reunited with Dr. Elliot and Fritz’s shipmate Emily. Settling in Melbourne, Becca bid farewell to TomTom and Mr. Morton as they departed with Emily. Through her journey, she evolved from a spirited child into a resilient, resourceful individual who balanced tomboyish enthusiasm with unwavering compassion and dedication to her family’s survival.
