Description
Leif Eriksson, born around 965 in Greenland, was a retired explorer renowned for discovering Vinland, a resource-rich land west of Greenland featuring wild grapes and timber. This discovery followed a perilous journey where his ship was trapped in ice near Brattahlíð; Leif alone survived after walking across the ice for days, his entire crew perishing. He maintained a close friendship with Thors Snorresson, a respected Jomsviking who abandoned warfare. After Thors' death in an ambush by Askeladd's forces in 1002, Leif shouldered guilt for failing to protect Thorfinn, Thors' young son, who stowed away on Askeladd's ship. Driven by this remorse, Leif spent over a decade searching for Thorfinn across various regions, locating him in York in 1014. By then, Thorfinn had become a vengeful warrior fixated on killing Askeladd and rejected Leif's plea to return home to Iceland.

Leif's persistence continued during Thorfinn's enslavement on Ketil's Farm in Denmark. Around 1018, after adopting a son named Thorfinn (later nicknamed "Bug-Eyes"), Leif traced the enslaved Thorfinn through Ketil's family. He negotiated with Ketil for safe passage to see Thorfinn. Upon confirming Thorfinn's identity, Leif insisted on freeing him despite initial resistance, eventually aiding Thorfinn and his friend Einar in escaping Ketil's Farm following a battle involving King Canute's forces.

After Thorfinn returned to Iceland, Leif proposed financing a voyage to Vinland by selling narwhal horns in Miklagard (Constantinople). He joined Thorfinn, Einar, Bug-Eyes, and others on this expedition. During the journey, Leif was captured in the Baltic region after Thorfinn's group split to evade pursuers. Imprisoned in Jomsborg, he suffered a leg injury from a stray arrow during a conflict. This wound severely deteriorated his health, causing chronic mobility issues that required a walking cane.

By 1021, Leif retired permanently to Greenland due to declining health, including hearing loss and severe aging. When Thorfinn visited en route to Vinland, Leif gifted him his old smoking pipe—a memento from his own Vinland voyage—and expressed pride in Thorfinn's pacifistic ideals, affirming Thors would have shared this pride. Their final interaction concluded with Thorfinn addressing Leif as "Father," symbolizing their deep bond.

Throughout his life, Leif was characterized by loyalty, compassion, and resilience. His moniker "Leif the Lucky" stemmed from surviving against odds and rescuing shipwrecked crews, though he privately grappled with remorse over perceived failures toward Thors' family. His mentorship of Thorfinn extended beyond exploration, embodying a commitment to redemption and peace.
