Joachim Kaps
Description
Joachim Kaps is a German actor and voice artist with a prolific career spanning several decades, known for his distinctive voice and extensive work in dubbing, particularly for animation and anime series.
Born in Görlitz, Saxony, in 1952, Kaps had an athletic background as a decathlete before pursuing performing arts. He studied acting at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. His early career was rooted in theatre, with engagements at the Südthüringisches Staatstheater in Meiningen and later with the pantomime ensemble at the Deutsches Theater Berlin. He also became a familiar face on German television, appearing in over two hundred roles, most notably as the host Achim on the children's show Brummkreisel and in the comedy series Ferienheim Bergkristall.
However, it is through his voice that Kaps has become widely recognized. His voice acting career includes a vast array of roles in dubs for film and television, radio plays, and audiobooks. Within the realm of anime, he has lent his voice to a variety of significant characters. Confirmed examples include providing the German voice for Tentomon in the Digimon franchise, including the film Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, and for Klarwein in the series Sirius the Jaeger. He also voiced Leif Eriksson in Vinland Saga, Toshizou Hijikata in Golden Kamuy, and Ziggy in Edens Zero. In Dr. Stone: New World, he took on the role of the antagonist Ibara.
Beyond anime, Kaps is the German voice of several iconic animated characters. He has been the voice of Tigger in Disney's Winnie the Pooh productions since the year 2000, taking over the role from Wolfgang Kühne. In 2015, following the death of Eberhard Prüter, he was chosen by the German public through an online vote to become the new German voice of Squidward Tentacles in the long-running series SpongeBob SquarePants.
Kaps continues to be active in theatre, having performed at the Criminal Theatre in Berlin since 2006 and participating in the annual Krabat Festival since 2012. He is the father of Susanne Kaps, who also works as a voice actor.
