Description
Georg, a rural boy in a 19th-century Flemish village, forges a steadfast bond with the protagonist after they rescue his impulsive younger brother, Paul, from drowning. Fueled by gratitude, Georg commits himself to supporting the protagonist through hardships, tempering his brash, teasing manner with fierce loyalty. He assists with daily chores like milk deliveries, defends the protagonist against accusations, and bridges ties between them and Alois, a wealthy friend, despite her family’s objections. When the protagonist disappears during a snowstorm after facing eviction, Georg joins the relentless search. Though clashing often with Paul over his reckless behavior, Georg remains a protective older sibling. His actions—defying social barriers, challenging adversity, and uniting disparate lives—underscore resilience and solidarity amid rigid class divides.
