Description
Muff Potter is a significant character in the anime adaptation of *The Adventures of Tom Sawyer*. Known throughout St. Petersburg as a habitually drunk man, he nevertheless maintains a friendly, jovial, and inherently good-hearted nature. Once a respected community member, alcoholism led to his downfall, making him a scorned social outcast.

His involvement in the central plot begins when he accompanies Injun Joe and Dr. Robinson to a graveyard at night for an illegal body exhumation. During this event, Injun Joe murders Dr. Robinson. Extremely intoxicated, Muff awakens confused, finds a bloody knife in his hand, and accepts Injun Joe's lie that he committed the murder. Joe exploits Muff's disorientation and trust, framing him for the crime.

The anime depicts Muff Potter as kind and gentle, especially towards children. He interacts amiably with Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, helping them mend broken kites and sharing prime fishing spots. Even while imprisoned under a potential death sentence for a crime he didn't commit, he shows concern for the boys. During their jail visits, he expresses gratitude for their small gifts and urges them to avoid alcohol so they don't end up like him. He selflessly avoids discussing his grim situation to prevent upsetting Tom or Huck.

Muff's plight profoundly impacts Tom Sawyer's development. Tom wrestles with guilt over knowing the truth but fearing Injun Joe's retaliation. Witnessing Muff's desperation and unwavering kindness during jail visits eventually compels Tom to testify at the trial, revealing Injun Joe's guilt and exonerating Muff. This act marks a pivotal moment in Tom's journey toward maturity.

Following his exoneration, Muff Potter regains his freedom. The townspeople, who had previously condemned him without evidence, now celebrate his innocence, embracing him with the same fervor they had once scorned him.
