Description
L'oreille ("The Ear"), an unnamed member of Askeladd's mercenary band, possesses a sharp-featured face with narrow eyes, a thin mustache, and a wrinkled chin. His attire consists of a medium-colored head wrap, a short-sleeved coat over a long-sleeved tunic, boots, and a winter cloak. Soft-spoken and taciturn, his defining trait is uncanny hearing, enabling him to distinguish humans from animals, estimate troop marching speeds, and detect approaching forces. This ability falters against motionless targets or snow-dampened sound. He wields an axe and shield competently and can assess troop movements based on experience.

His long tenure earned Askeladd's trust in his hearing. Key moments include pressing his ear to the ground near the River Severn in November 1013, revising his estimate of Thorkell's approaching forces from two days to under one day and alerting the band to mounted scouts. Days later, he detected Thorkell's approach at Roman ruins, prompting their crossing via Gratianus's ferry. In Brycheiniog, he identified warriors ahead but failed to detect stationary ambushers who attacked later. During winter at Anne's village, snow limited his hearing range while on watch in a tree, leading him to advise closer monitoring of Ragnar, Canute, and Willibald. He later alerted Askeladd and Bjorn to armed farmers flanking the village from the east, enabling evacuation, and warned of Thorkell's midnight approach from the south after the farmers' defeat. In January 1014, he estimated sufficient time to destroy a bridge over the Severn as Thorkell's forces approached. Following an unspecified fate during the mutiny against Askeladd or Thorkell's arrival, his decapitated head was used for archery practice by Thorkell's men; Atli later recognized his remains.

He appears in manga chapters 23–32, 37, 42, and 54, and anime episodes 5–6, 10–11, and 14–16.
