Description
Exsedol Folmo is a Zentradi character who holds the position of Chief Archivist, a role that makes him a living repository of information. By the time of Macross 7, his notable physical characteristics include green or grayish skin, a bald and swollen cranium, and retractable tendrils in place of standard arms. This appearance is a deliberate change from his earlier, more human-like look, which he originally had during the First Space War. The in-story explanation for this transformation is that Exsedol underwent physical and genetic modification, enlarging his body and brain to safeguard the vast trove of knowledge within his mind, fearing that the process of micronization (shrinking to human size) might cause him to lose his memories and intellect.

In the narrative of Macross 7, Exsedol serves as a key strategic advisor aboard the Battle 7, the main warship of the Macross 7 fleet. He works directly under Captain Maximilian Jenius, a legendary pilot from the original series whom he now assists. His primary function on the bridge is to act as an encyclopedia of galactic history. Given his refusal to be micronized to preserve his memories, he remains at his full, immense Zentradi size. This creates a unique visual on the ship's bridge, where a special opening in the floor allows his giant head to emerge and participate in briefings and tactical discussions alongside the human-sized crew.

Exsedol’s personality balances immense wisdom with a touch of dramatic flair. He is a vital source of exposition and strategic insight, possessing a memory said to contain details of every combat in the Zentradi’s 500,000-year history. However, his character also provides moments of levity or tension through his instinctual reactions. The Protodeviln, the primary antagonists of Macross 7, are a deep-seated racial trauma for the Zentradi. Consequently, upon encountering them, Exsedol often loses his cool composure, giving in to an ancient, programmed terror that causes him to retreat or hide within his floor compartment.

Despite this fear, his role evolves beyond that of a mere commentator. His motivation is driven by a scholar’s curiosity and a duty to use his knowledge to protect the fleet. Recognizing the threat of the Protodeviln, he works to uncover their origins, leading to his direct involvement in investigations. In one significant episode, he physically leaves the Battle 7 for the first time to examine ancient Protoculture ruins on the planet Lux, hoping to find answers that could help defeat the enemy. This highlights his development from a purely reactive advisor to a proactive investigator.

Exsedol’s key relationships are defined by his professional roles. His deep respect and loyalty to Maximilian Jenius mirror his earlier career serving the Zentradi fleet commander Britai Kridanik. He forms a strategic partnership with the scientists and crew of the Battle 7, sharing his historical knowledge to counter new threats. While his personality is generally informative and professional, his unique position as a giant among micronized individuals and his occasional terror of the enemy make him a distinctive and memorable member of the command staff.
