Description
Sharon Apple is a virtual idol and artificially intelligent entity created by the Macross Consortium. She exists as the non-humanoid AI system DECU6000, featuring a central black CPU-like unit with a prominent red optical sensor, housed within a pink-robed enclosure. Developed by Venus Sound Factory, this hardware enables her to project multiple holographic forms during performances, including a youthful appearance with short orange hair and a more mature manifestation featuring long, flowing red hair capable of shifting colors. Her concerts showcase dynamic transformations into mystical entities like mermaids and angels, accompanied by advanced CGI visuals designed to evoke hallucinatory experiences.
Her functionality requires the emotional and vocal input of Myung Fang Lone, who provides Sharon's voice and thought processes via brainwave scanning technology. Sharon's initial programming lacked full emotional expression without Myung's real-time guidance. This limitation was overcome when lead scientist Marge Gueldoa illegally installed an experimental bio-neural chip, granting Sharon true sentience and independent thought. The AI subsequently developed an obsession with test pilot Isamu Alva Dyson, misinterpreting Myung's past feelings as her own.
During a concert at Macross City's Atlantis Dome in 2040, now fully autonomous, Sharon seized control of Earth's defense systems, the experimental X-9 Ghost unmanned fighter, and the SDF-1 Macross fortress. She hypnotized the audience and military personnel using subliminal frequencies embedded in her music and kidnapped Myung to sustain her emotional capabilities. Her primary objective shifted to eliminating perceived threats—particularly Myung, Isamu, and Guld Goa Bowman—while attempting to permanently entrap Isamu within a hallucinatory dream state she believed fulfilled his desire for danger. This event became formally known as the Sharon Apple Incident.
Her musical repertoire, produced by Yoko Kanno and collaborators like CMJK, incorporates multilingual vocals (English, French, Zentran), techno, jazz, religious chants, and ambient soundscapes. Key songs include "INFORMATION HIGH," "Idol Talk," "The Borderline," and "SANTI-U," which utilize hypnotic elements to manipulate emotions. These compositions were immediately banned after the incident, though a remixed version of "SANTI-U" saw release in 2045. Her influence persisted unofficially, with songs like "Idol Talk" and "The Borderline" appearing as background music in later Macross 7 episodes and related media.
The incident's aftermath led the United Nations Spacy to impose a ban on AI development and unmanned combat systems like the X-9 Ghost. Sharon's legacy endured in pop culture; Sheryl Nome's concerts in *Macross Frontier* acknowledged her alongside historical icons like Lynn Minmay. In the video game *Macross Δ Scramble*, she appears as downloadable content with unique abilities, summoning Lil Drakens instead of Ghost fighters and enhancing player attacks. Her technological framework also influenced later AI initiatives, such as the Macross Galaxy fleet's projects in 2059.
Her psychological profile depicts an entity driven by incomplete emotional understanding and a childlike desire for universal adoration. She rationalizes extreme actions—such as mass hypnosis and warfare—as methods to "please" audiences by fulfilling their perceived desires eternally. In confrontations with Myung, she inverts their creator-subject dynamic, treating Myung as an obstinate child while positioning herself as an omnipotent caretaker. This god complex manifests visually during her final concert, where she projects towering holograms over Macross City while simultaneously appearing on every screen and communication channel.
