Description
Anubis, originally named Shuten Douji ("Red sky child" or "Red top child") in Japanese media, was born Toshitada Koma in Kyoto during Japan's Warring States period. A samurai from a minor clan, he harbored ambitions to unify Japan but grew frustrated by his clan's limitations. This ambition attracted Talpa (Arago), ruler of the Netherworld, who promised him dominion over humanity. Toshitada abandoned his clan to become the Dark Warlord of Cruelty, serving Talpa as a ruthless commander. His dark gray and blue Armor of Cruelty (Oni Armor), representing Spring, drew power from dark thoughts and excess energy. It was equipped with a kusari-gama, a scythe connected to a clawed weight by a chain, used in his signature attack "Ko Rai Sen" ("Red Thunder Flash" or "Quake With Fear").
Initially defined by ego and cruelty, he clashed frequently with the Ronin Warriors, especially Ryo Sanada. Repeated defeats and criticism from fellow warlords caused his loyalty to Talpa to waver. A turning point came when the Ancient One (Kaos) intervened, urging him to "open his heart to the virtue of the armor." This act broke Talpa's control, restored Toshitada's humanity and memories, and led to profound regret for his past actions. After redemption, he succeeded the Ancient One as a guardian against the Dynasty, adopting monk robes and wielding a shakujo staff for protection and mystical purposes.
His armor retained its potential for good, capable of "bringing peace to humanity" when used righteously. Post-redemption, he supported the Ronin Warriors against Talpa, earning Ryo's trust despite their history. He played a critical role in securing the Jewel of Life (Heart of the Ancients), an artifact essential to sealing Talpa's power, using the Ancient One's staff to access its submerged temple.
His character arc transitions from a power-hungry antagonist to a meditative guide dedicated to atonement, exemplifying themes of redemption and moral choice. This development and his newfound virtue of loyalty are consistent across the television series and OVAs.
