OVA
Description
Originating from Cephiro, Ascot is a summoner ("Paru" or "Shoukanshi") who conjures monsters via evocation pentacles formed by hand gestures. He considers these peaceful creatures his friends, yet villagers feared them, causing his rejection and isolation. Zagato exploited this vulnerability, offering sanctuary within his castle in exchange for Ascot's service; Ascot accepted to protect his companions.
Initially serving Zagato as an antagonist, Ascot repeatedly attacked the Magic Knights using summoned monsters named after automobiles like Atalante, Pajero, and Vigor. His assaults included destroying Presea's home—indirectly causing her death—and deploying a disguised wounded animal ("Hikari") to exploit Hikaru's compassion. This trap forced Hikaru to destroy the creature after it injured her and captured Umi.
A pivotal confrontation with Umi catalyzed his change. After his monsters were defeated, Umi physically confronted him, criticizing his use of friends as weapons and stating true care meant protecting them, not endangering them. This revelation prompted Ascot to defect from Zagato, apologize to the Knights, and join their cause. He later persuaded Caldina to cease hostilities against the Knights, and both defected together.
Following Cephiro's pillar system collapse, Ascot used willpower to manifest physical maturity, adopting an older, taller appearance (approximately 1.70 meters), partly motivated by a desire to impress Umi. His monsters found acceptance within Cephiro's castle, assisting residents without fear. To avoid further exploiting his summoned creatures, he learned defensive and utility spells from Clef while retaining his summoning abilities.
Ascot harbored unrequited romantic feelings for Umi, expressing them tentatively in the anime but receiving only a generalized affirmation of her care for Cephiro's people. Caldina frequently teased him about his shyness around her. The manga implies a potential budding relationship between them by the story's conclusion, contrasting with the anime's resolution.
Alternate media portrayals diverge: the OVA depicts a bloodthirsty Ascot summoning only a deity resembling a giant crawdad; he dies after succumbing to dark powers battling Umi. In the Sega Saturn game, he initially aids the Knights under the alias "Alto" after defecting but ultimately sacrifices himself to save them from Caldina's attack.
