Description
Dr. Bernard Goodman, also known as Professor Yamato in Japanese media, is a 25th-century scientist living and working in Tama City. Specializing in fossils and ruins, he operates within the Bureau of Time and Space, also known as the Time Police. He serves as the uncle and guardian to siblings Sarah and Tony Goodman, sharing his home laboratory with them. His scientific focus involves studying Time Shifters and developing time travel and fossil restoration technologies.
He successfully restored the prehistoric caveboy Flint Hammerhead from fossil form after the twins' discovery. However, his attempt to restore Flint's father, Rocky Hammerhead, resulted in Rocky becoming a sentient stone slab; this slab was later fashioned into a weapon for Flint. Goodman frequently acts as Mission Control for Flint and the twins during their missions, providing technological support, analyzing situations, and dispatching Time Shifters. His predictions regarding the Master forms of Time Shifters like Talen, Jitterbug, and Lynx consistently proved accurate.
Personality-wise, Goodman exhibits a laid-back and occasionally goofy demeanor. He harbors a persistent romantic interest in Jillian Gray, the Time Police chief, repeatedly asking her out despite consistent rejections. This romantic ineptitude is a recurring trait, depicted through actions like studying Rocky's behavior for dating insights or noting his unmarried status as a concern; he often expresses puzzlement about women and relationships. This trait appears familial, echoed later when Sarah and Tony meet a similar ancestor. Professionally, he faces criticism for contributing to Flint's perceived lack of seriousness.
Portrayal differences exist between media. The manga depicts him as a smoker, a habit absent in the anime outside a brief teenage depiction. The manga also shows Petra Fina Dagmar briefly developing a minor crush on him after their encounter. His laboratory's branding was altered in the English dub to display Time Police logos, visually integrating him more directly into the organization.
His scientific contributions extend beyond fossil restoration to studying captured Time Shifters and developing methods to send them through time to aid Flint. While his Time Shifter choices were usually effective, some proved inadequate in combat. His character role remains consistent across official media, centered on providing technical support and comic relief through his romantic pursuits.
