Description
Sakata-no-Kintoki, originally named Kintoki, is a woman forged by political machinations and familial treachery. Hailing from a noble Heian-era lineage, her father concealed her gender from infancy, masquerading her as his son to thwart her uncle’s ruthless bid for clan dominance. Known as “Kaidōmaru,” she grew up poised as a heir until her uncle’s coup shattered her childhood, slaughtering her parents and nearly claiming her life before warrior leader Minamoto no Raikō intervened.

Raikō escorted her to the capital, where she trained rigorously under his command. Rising through ranks, she earned her place among his elite Four Heavenly Kings, renowned for her mastery of the axe—a deliberate echo of the folkloric Kintarō, though her identity and history starkly diverge. Her past, however, lingered ominously, intertwined with her cousin Ohni-hime, who later emerged as the bandit warlord Shuten Dōji.

Unaware of Kintoki’s true identity, Ohni-hime harbored a consuming infatuation, convinced Kintoki was the male heir she sought to liberate. This delusion spiraled into clashes between Ohni-hime’s rebels and the capital’s defenders, triggering the city’s devastation. The strife climaxed with Kintoki’s abduction, compelling Raikō to storm the bandits’ mountain fortress.

Kintoki’s bond with Raikō deepened into a silent dance of respect and restrained emotion, transcending mentor and protégé. Her existence remained fractured between duty and self-discovery, burdened by the lie of her gender and the scars of her family’s annihilation.

The tale leaves threads untied: Kintoki’s ultimate fate, the political fallout of the rebellion, and the unresolved tension between her and Raikō. Blending history and myth, her narrative reweaves tradition through gender inversion and star-crossed loyalties.
