Description
Big Stone is an African American outlaw serving as an antagonist. Initially menacing, he subverts the "Scary Black Man" trope through morally complex motivations. His actions stem from a personal vendetta against Wingate for murdering his mother and a broader mission to liberate enslaved African Americans.

Despite his outlaw status, he operates with a sense of nobility, challenging the era's slavery. He orchestrates the liberation of enslaved people from a slave trader, demonstrating this commitment. This effort ends with the slave trader subsequently murdering the freed individuals, resulting in a devastating "Shoot the Shaggy Dog" outcome.

His relationship with the protagonist, Isamu, evolves into one of mutual respect, positioning him as a "Worthy Opponent." Their confrontations recognize each other's strength and principles. Following a significant battle, Big Stone suffers a severe physical defeat that leaves him broken. He is then sold to a slave owner, concluding his known narrative arc in enslavement.

His story embodies the period's harsh racial injustices and African American struggles, exploring themes of oppression, resistance, and the moral ambiguities of seeking justice within a violent, discriminatory society.
