Diego Reggente
Description
Diego Reggente was an Italian voice actor and dubbing director, born in Fiume, Croatia, on October 3, 1944, and passing away in Rome on January 28, 2023, at the age of 78. His career in dubbing began in a notably serendipitous manner while he was working as a taxi driver in Trieste. After giving a ride to the renowned filmmaker Orson Welles, he was encouraged to pursue acting, leading him to enroll in theater school and eventually embark on a decades-long career bringing voices to Italian audiences.
Reggente became a prominent figure in Italian dubbing, providing the Italian voice for a vast array of characters in animation and live-action. In the realm of anime, his work was extensive. He voiced Ghyata in The Brave Frog and Big Stone in Kōya no Shōnen Isamu (known in Italian as Sam il ragazzo del West). He also took on the role of Captain Juuzou Okita in the Uchū Senkan Yamato 2199: Hoshi-Meguru Hakobune film and its associated series.
His anime portfolio included many other significant parts. He was the voice of Degwin Sodo Zabi in multiple Mobile Suit Gundam productions, including the series, films, and The Origin OAV, as well as Bask Om in Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory and Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. He voiced Doctor Saotome in Getter Robo and Getter Robo G, and Mimashi in Kotetsu Jeeg and Kotetsushin Jeeg. For the Digimon franchise, he lent his voice to multiple characters, including ShogunGekomon in Digimon Adventure. He was also the first Italian voice of Optimus Prime in the 1980s dub of The Transformers, a role he notably reprised for a fresh DVD dub of the series in 2008.
Beyond anime, Reggente's career was marked by a prolific output in live-action dubbing. He was frequently the Italian voice for actors such as Al Pacino, Danny Trejo, and Chuck Norris. He was also well-known for dubbing iconic television characters, including the Cigarette Smoking Man in The X-Files, Peter Benton in E.R., and Scotty in the various Star Trek series and films. His work extended to being a dubbing director and a voice for documentaries. His son, Emiliano Reggente, also became a voice actor, continuing the family legacy in the industry.
