Description
Degwin Sodo Zabi is the patriarch of the Zabi family and the sovereign of the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War. His political ascent began within the Republic of Zeon, where he served as a key aide and chief of staff to the ideological leader Zeon Zum Deikun. In the year Universal Century 0068, Zeon Zum Deikun died under what many considered suspicious circumstances, and Degwin claimed that with his dying words, Deikun had named him as his successor. While no concrete evidence was ever uncovered, general consensus among observers easily connected Degwin to Deikun's sudden death. Following this transition, Degwin purged loyalists of the late Deikun, declared the transformation of the Side 3 colony cluster into the Principality of Zeon, and assumed the position of sovereign, taking the honorific Sodo, meaning Lord. His birth date is recorded as Universal Century 0017, making him sixty-two years old by the time of the war.

As a personality, Degwin presents as an affable but ultimately weary elderly leader. He is a practical politician who originally supported the cause of Spacenoid independence, but his motivations become increasingly personal and bleak as the war progresses. Degwin placed his four children into high-ranking military and political offices, but he became consumed by the intense intra-familial feuding, particularly between his eldest son Gihren and his daughter Kycilia. The death of his youngest son, Garma Zabi, proved to be a catastrophic emotional blow from which Degwin never recovered. Garma was his favorite child and appeared to be the least spoiled or corrupted by power. This loss plunged Degwin into a deep depression, causing him to withdraw from active governance. He left most day-to-day operations to Gihren, who effectively assumed the role of a self-styled Fuhrer, reducing Degwin to little more than a figurehead ruler.

Degwin's role in the story is that of a nominal leader watching his power and family erode. He gave approval for the Solar Ray superweapon project, but genuine disgust and exhaustion drove his later actions. He openly expressed contempt for Gihren's ruthless methods and autocratic ideals. In a pointed confrontation, Degwin humiliated his son by comparing him to a caricature of Adolf Hitler, stating that Gihren could never be what Zeon envisioned as a Newtype and that, like Hitler, his own followers would eventually turn against him. Degwin anticipated the schemes of his daughter Kycilia and the dangers of his son's ambition, yet he seemed increasingly incapable or unwilling to intervene, silently allowing his power to be stripped away.

Degwin's key relationships are defined by tragedy and tension. His bond with Garma was one of genuine paternal affection, and his grief over Garma's death is the primary catalyst for his withdrawal and eventual peace initiative. His relationship with Gihren is adversarial and filled with disgust, as he views his son's ideology as a perversion of Zeon's founding principles. While his other children, including Kycilia and Dozle, appear to respect him, the family unit is fractured by ambition and rivalry. His relationship with the Earth Federation, particularly General Revil, becomes the focus of his final act as he seeks an end to the war. Additional background information suggests Degwin originally studied at a military academy and was known as a calm and thoughtful individual who initially followed Deikun's ideals before the responsibility of governance and the loss of his children transformed him.

Development is central to Degwin's character arc. He begins as a scheming political operator who may have orchestrated his rise to power. He transitions into a reluctant war leader, and finally into a melancholic, disillusioned elder who has lost all taste for conflict. He becomes genuinely tired of war, driven not by a sudden love for the Federation but by the personal losses of Garma and later his son Dozle. This exhaustion culminated in his decision to arrange a secret meeting with General Revil to discuss peace negotiations. In a final act of betrayal, as the two leaders' fleets gathered in a neutral zone, Degwin's son Gihren ordered the Solar Ray to be fired. The massive weapon incinerated Degwin's flagship, the Great Degwin, along with Revil's command ship and their accompanying fleets, effectively assassinating his own father to continue the war. Alternative versions of events exist; in the novelization of the story, Degwin survives the war only to be deposed following the deaths of Gihren and Kycilia.

In terms of notable abilities, Degwin is not a soldier or pilot. His strengths lie in political maneuvering, nation-building, and military strategy early in his career. He possessed the foresight and cunning to transition a republic into a principality and build a formidable military force capable of challenging the Earth Federation. However, by the time of the One Year War, his abilities have atrophied due to age and grief, leaving him as a frail, politically weakened figure who cannot control his own children or stop the machinery of war he helped create. He is also physically unremarkable, often depicted as a large, bald man with a pale complexion and wearing colored glasses, which contributes to his image as an aged and somewhat alien or imposing ruler.
