Description
Paragas, also rendered as Paragus in some English versions, is a Saiyan and the father of Broly in the 1993 anime film Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan. He serves as the secondary antagonist of the movie and is an elite Saiyan who once held the rank of colonel in the royal Saiyan military under King Vegeta.
His background is shaped by tragedy and exile. When Broly was born with a power level of ten thousand, far higher than any other Saiyan infant of his generation, King Vegeta feared the child might become the legendary Super Saiyan and threaten the royal line. He ordered the infant executed. Paragas pleaded for his son's life, arguing that Broly was only a child, but his pleas were ignored and he was sentenced to death alongside his son. The two were cast out from Planet Vegeta, and on that same day the planet was destroyed by Frieza. Broly unconsciously used his power to shield himself and his father, carrying them safely to another world. Paragas raised Broly in the years that followed, but the boy's immense and barely controlled rage proved dangerous; during one violent episode, Broly struck his father and cost him his left eye. In order to subdue and command his son, Paragas commissioned a scientist to create a control crown that could suppress Broly's fury and direct his power. With this device he used Broly as a weapon, most notably to devastate much of the Southern Galaxy.
In terms of personality, Paragas stands apart from most Saiyans of his era because he does not seek glory in combat. He is never shown engaging in direct battle during the film and instead relies on guile, patience, and manipulation. He is calculating and methodical, treating the people around him as pieces in a long-prepared scheme. His overwhelming motivation is revenge against the Saiyan royal family for the exile he and his son suffered. The planet has been placed in the path of a massive comet called Comet Camori, and Paragas intends to let the comet destroy the planet and everyone on it, including Vegeta and the Earth's warriors, as retribution for his exile. The plan begins to unravel because of Broly's unstable nature. When Broly is provoked by the sound of Goku's crying, he breaks free of the control crown and goes berserk. As the situation collapses around him, Paragas attempts to flee in an escape pod, expressing reluctance to abandon his son. Broly kills him by crushing the pod and hurling it into the path of the approaching comet.
