TV-Series
Description
Juuzou Okita is the commanding officer of the space battleship Yamato and a flag officer of the United Nations Cosmo Navy, holding the rank of Admiral and serving as the Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Cosmo Fleet. A native of Fukushima Prefecture born in 2141, Okita is a man in his late fifties whose outward calm and composure conceal a tough and unyielding fighting spirit. He is an expert in astrophysics who always wished to visit space not merely as a military man but as a man of science, combining the disciplined nature of a soldier with the experience of a scientist.
Okita is utterly devoted to his mission to save Earth from the Garmillas threat, even at the cost of his own life. He suffers from a chronic illness caused by exposure to the planet bombs used by the Garmillas to irradiate Earth, a condition that progressively worsens throughout the voyage. Despite his failing health, which sometimes leaves him bedridden, he remains convinced that he will live to see his home world again and continues to serve as a source of wisdom and advice to the crew. His strategic mind is characterized by aggressive head-on tactics and the ability to use terrain to his advantage, frequently upsetting opponents with unexpected maneuvers. He also possesses diplomatic skill, forming alliances with former enemies when necessary.
In his role as captain of the Yamato, Okita leads the crew on the perilous 168,000-light-year journey to the planet Iscandar to obtain the Cosmo Reverse System, a device capable of restoring Earth's ruined biosphere. His leadership is defined by his unwavering resolve in the face of overwhelming odds and his refusal to surrender. In one notable instance, when faced with a Garmillas demand for unconditional surrender, his response was a firm refusal, echoing the defiance of historical military commanders. A pivotal moment of his command comes when he chooses to use the Yamato's Wave Motion Gun not as a weapon of destruction, but to save the people of the Garmillan capital, Baleras, when its own leader attempted to sacrifice it.
Okita shares a deep and significant relationship with Susumu Kodai, a young officer assigned to the Yamato. The admiral regards Kodai almost as a replacement for his own son, who was killed in the Second Battle of Mars, and he also sorely regrets the death of Kodai's older brother, Mamoru, who died under his command during Operation M. This loss creates a strong paternal bond between them, with Okita acting as a mentor who encourages Kodai to think independently and have the confidence to make his own decisions. He is also a close friend of Admiral Ryu Hijikata and Hikozaemon Tokugawa, relationships forged during his years of service.
Throughout the series, Okita undergoes significant development as his terminal illness progresses. He begins the journey as an active commander but grows increasingly weak, yet his strategic importance and moral authority never waver. His character is defined by his sacrifice and his final triumph. After successfully completing the mission and securing the means to restore Earth, Okita dies as the Yamato returns to Earth orbit, having achieved his goal of seeing his home planet once more. His spirit and memories are later revealed to have been captured by the Cosmo Reverse System, playing a direct role in the final restoration of Earth. Okita is remembered as a man of honor who respects his enemy and whose primary motivation is to save his people and homeland, not to seek revenge or extermination.
