Description
Katsunoshin Watari, a Japanese student in the 1800s, journeys to the United States to further his education. When his meticulous preparations fail and poverty strikes, he turns to gold hunting for survival. Amid this harsh existence, he crosses paths with Sakura, a Native American woman, forging a life with her and fathering a son, Isamu. The family’s hopes to rebuild in Japan collapse when Sakura dies suddenly, and a bandit assault leaves Katsunoshin near-fatally wounded, severing him from Isamu.

Katsunoshin disappears for years as Isamu grows under the care of transient gold panners and later the outlaw Wingate. Defying death, Katsunoshin reemerges, dedicating years to scouring the land for his lost child. Their story closes with a hard-won reunion, mending the wounds of their prolonged separation in the narrative’s concluding arc.
