Description
Yumi Hanner, granddaughter of retired United Planets Space Force Admiral Robert J. Hanner, is the identical twin sister of Emi Hanner. She and Emi survived a terrorist hostage situation at their home alongside their grandfather and UPSF officer Yuriko Star, rescued by Justy Ueki Tylor during his pension check delivery. This event spurred both sisters to enlist in the UPSF, using their father's influence to secure assignment to the Soyokaze under Tylor's command.

Yumi and Emi are inseparable, frequently finishing each other's sentences and acting in unison. Driven by fierce determination and persistence, they strive to contribute meaningfully aboard the Soyokaze. Feeling underutilized initially, they petitioned for flight training. Their exceptional natural aptitude forced misogynistic pilot Kojiro Sakai to reluctantly become their instructor. Despite their enthusiasm, they can be oblivious to how their actions affect others, unintentionally pestering Kojiro.

Personality-wise, Yumi is caring and supportive, though her eagerness to help can seem overly intrusive. She maintains a childlike demeanor at 17, contrasting with her admiration for crewmate Harumi Nakagawa's maturity. Yumi draws inspiration from Tylor's compassionate nature and holds deep affection for her grandfather. She enjoys playful teasing, particularly regarding attractive men whose facial appearance she prioritizes. Her passion for flying fuels her dedication to pilot training alongside Emi; both operate ships named "Shinryu."

The twins develop strong loyalty to Captain Tylor, often supporting him during crew conflicts and aspiring to become his romantic partners. This devotion leads them to side with him over others in most situations, though exceptions occur. Their character development centers on transitioning from inexperienced enlistees to skilled pilots, maintaining unwavering support for Tylor, and integrating into the Soyokaze crew dynamic. No significant divergence in their shared characterization occurs across the series, OVAs, or related media.
